Anyone have any details on the rebel accident near Brantford Ontario? I
believe it was Les McInnis and Claude Potvin's Rebel on amphibs...

rebel accident

Post by Bob Patterson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:02 pm

Hi Peter !

Unfortunately, it <was> Claude & J.C.'s beautiful Rebel that
sank. They had several problems fitting the "Easy-Lift" floats from
the Quebec manufacturer, but persisted, against the advice of several
Rebel builders. The floats were not working properly on the wheel
gear, and then they tried them on water ....

This is the FOURTH Rebel we've heard of to SINK on floats
from this company - there was another in the Timmins area just
last month ! Apparently, the 2 front compartments were not
properly closed in, and weren't sealed. There have been many buyers,
who planned to use these floats on different types of aircraft,
reporting that "Easy-Lift" floats leak badly, are VERY much heavier
than claimed, and arrive late, missing many components, and with parts
which don't function correctly !!

All this seems to say that NO builders should consider using
<these> floats - straight or amphib ! There's no reason at all, now
that Murphy offers factory built floats, as well as kits.

Claude's Rebel will fly again, but there is considerable
damage from the dirty river water. All the instruments and radios
will need overhaul, and cleaning the interior and exterior will
be a LOT of work. I hope he followed our advice, and 'insured it
to the ears' for at least the first year ! We hear that nobody
was hurt, just a bit of pride ...
