Acetone

Post by Gary » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:02 pm

I have a question about Acetone. In talking to a few people at the Rebel
meetings, Acetone is the prefer means of cleaning the aluminium before
corrosion proofing. MEK is used only on really bad spots. Also in a talk
with one member he said that he will thin the primer with Acetone to get a
smoother an thin finish on large surfaces, but will still use the epoxy
primer at normal thickness on the mating of parts. I am getting to the stage
where I will be starting corrosion proofing parts an would like to know if
others also use this method.
Thank you

Acetone

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:02 pm

Yes acetone is the cheapest to buy (compared to Polyfiber cleaner, mek etc),
works great and a LOT safer than using MEK. MEK in the eyes causes permanent
damage in about 10 seconds (mind you acetone probable ain't great either!)!
NO do not use Acetone to thin your EP430, or what ever brand of corrosion
proofing you are using. Use the proper thinner for the brand of stuff you
are using, otherwise you don't know what you are doing to the properties of
the stuff.

My 2 cents for what they are worth (and they are Canadian cents!)
