header tape

There was some discussion recently regarding engine cooling and the use of header tape. I went to to Canadian Tire and besides aluminum tape they have that stuff used for wrapping mufflers. Can anyone tell me if header tape is something different and if so, where I can get it.

Also, I have the standard cowling and don't understand the dynamics of airflow but I noticed that some have added a lip to the cowl to improve air flow. If anyone has pics of their cowl I'd like to try and add this lip. I'm running a 912 and have had high temperature readings especially on hot days and we have checked the gauge and oil; temps with a thermometer so I assume my problems are with air flow. I aslo have an oil cooler located in the front of the cowl just under the prop hub.

Any help is appreciated.

Any good hotrod shop. Summit Racing, Jeg's Performance both have catalogs.
I'm sure there are some performance shop's in CA. also.

Hi Aurele !

I think the muffler wrap stuff is very similar - but don't
use it on a regular exhaust system. Anything but stainless will
corrode VERY quickly !

I can't remember - does your cowling still have the molded-in
lip in the fiberglas at the bottom rear ?? If so, all you need to
do is add a strip of aluminum to the front of it that extends down
another inch or 2 - that might help a bit. (Many of these cowls
had the lip trimmed off, and the opening in the bottom enlarged
to 2 or 3 times the original size. While this helped, I'm now
convinced that this isn't the best way to go !)

One thing to watch in the warmer weather is the oil. It is
now getting hard to get anything but 5-50 synthetic, and the <5>
part is just tooooo thin !! I've managed to get some Mobil 1
20-50 synthetic, and that's much better, but for really warm
weather, Rotax suggests straight 40 weight. Unfortunately, I haven't
been able to find ANY straight 40 or 50 synthetic, or high quality
automotive oils !!! The thinner oil doesn't lubricate well enough,
and the increased friction raises the oil temp.....
