It's very difficult to try to reinforce the old wraps - much
easier just to order the newest ones...
Rebuilding a 912 yourself is NOT a good idea. There are only a very few
approved Rotax shops in North America who can do SOME of the work. Very
specialized equipment is needed - Katana still return their engines to
the factory in Austria for overhaul !!
The good news is that you probably won't HAVE to overhaul the
used 912 !! We have over 900 hr. on ours, and it's still just getting
broken in !! There is one in Germany now with over 3,600 hr. on it !
The 912 S , with 100 hp., sound like a real winner - we're thinking
seriously about throwing away the old Lycosaurus O-235 and replacing it
with the 912S ... (Anybody want a F/W forward COMPLETE package -
mounts, cowling, exhaust, McCauley prop, EI scanner, tach, etc.... ???)
I guess you should really look at the kind of flying you want
to do, to help choose an engine. Deciding on initial cost alone can
result in problems. The 912 gives VERY cheap fun flying (3 gal/hr),
but if you plan high performance flying on amphib. floats, a good
Lycoming O-320 is what you need. (An O-235-L2C would be "adequate" -
an old O-235-C much less satisfactory, although both are OK on STRAIGHT
floats. We even flew the 912 on straight 1500's ! )

You were right with the .020 tapered corners. I'm thinking of making up
aout of .032 or somehow reinforcing the .020's. I've just done one so far.
Thanks also for your ideas on engines. Another possibilty for me is to get
isused 912 and rebuild it. Jeff from Lockwood mentioned that the 100hp 912s
coming out which may make more used 912 available.
