VGs - Elevator Control

Hi All
One of the local Rebel owners has installed VGs (Vortex Generators:
www.VGSTOL.com)
It is a stock 0-235 Rebel and he usually flies it with half tanks and solo.
He installed VGs on the wings and tail. The major change to the flight
characteristics was more elevator control in the flare. He installed these
with double-sided carpet tape to test the locations and has never moved them
from the first installation with the original double-sides carpet tape still
intact two years later. At one point I found a source for plastic VGs on the
web (I don't have that link anymore). If anyone is interested in more
information I can post photos of the installation.

Dan Stewart of Vashon Island installed VGs with the same result. For
pictures see:
http://communities.msn.com/NWRebelExper ... PhotoID=80
You may have to copy and paste this entire url beginning with http...and
ending with ID=80 if the complete link is not hot on your browser. Dan also
has spades on the wings shown on the referenced photo and in another photo
on this album. Next time I see his plane I will photograph the VGs on the
horizontal stabilizer.

Hi !

Sounds like there are at least 2 guys out there who have had
MUCH different experiences with Vortex Generators than I've had !!

The Rebel I tried with VG's didn't have a crisp stall, tending
to mush, BUT - it lost all lateral stability, and was much harder
to fly straight and level, AND it was at least 5 mph slower than it
likely would have been without the VG's ! I was NOT impressed !!

It didn't have any on the tail, as I recall ....
(of course, my memory's not as good as ..... what was I saying ??) ;-)

VGs - Elevator Control

Figure if we are going to "beat" on the VG's, I would add my two cents! If
you live and love to fly in a snow covered environment, have fun cleaning
the wings off with your broom with all those pieces of angle sticking up on
the wing. Great place to hold ice on the wing aye, right on the leading
edge. Wing covers you say! They won't last very long rubbing up and down on
all those nice "cutting" blades.

IF <I> were to install VG's anywhere, it would be on the UNDERSIDE of the
stabilizer to keep the airflow attached to the elevator. Snow doesn't sit
there! I believe these are the only VG's that are giving Jim's friend "more
elevator control in the flare"!

Blue skies,

Hi Jim,

I for one would like to see those photos of the vortex generators. Are you
planning on using them?

I will try to get some photos of the vortex generators today.
I personally would only put them on the tail to help with Elevator Control.
Putting them on the wings just seems reduce your cruise speeds.
It just seems like something that would be easy to try and if it didn't help
you could just peel them back off.

I have vg's on my Rebel and have not noticed any decrease in cruise speed. I
have heard that others have lost 5 mph but I have not noticed this. Biggest
improvement was in the flare, no more sudden sink. I agree with those that
say they are a pain, in places where snow and wing covers and winter flying
are the norm.
