Elite trim tab hinge

I'm a new builder (Elite TD #714) with an early
question on the installation of the trim tab
hinge. The manual is vague on this point, but I
would imagine one would want to install the hinge
facing down rather than sitting above the
elevator skin. But how then does one attach and
detach the trim tab? It doesn't appear that
there would be enough clearance to get the hinge
pin in and out.

I installed the hinge down and extended the hinge pin out to the end of the
elevator. There is a hole in the elevator end rib and with a hook I can pull
the pin out. The end of the pin is safety wired in place.

Welcome to the group. I installed the hinge facing down and the pin is
trapped but I can't think of any reason to need to remove the pin unless
the trim tab gets damaged. If that happens I'll just drill out the rivets
to remove it.

Elite trim tab hinge

Welcome to the group of "Elite" builders ;^)

We have Elite #583 and when we built the Elevator we must have eyeballed it and
decided that the space left open by putting the hinge facing in would leave too
big a gap between the skins or something so we have it pointing out. The
manual we were working from at that time didn't say what to do there.

The question must have come up though with other builders because the newer
version of the manual we finally managed to obtain from MAM (dated 29/06/98)
has a less than perfect hand sketch of the hinge that probably indicates that
it should be facing in.

I certainly appreciate the suggestions. MAM Tech Support also responded
with the recommendation that I bring in the hinge pin through the outboard
rib. It works! Ch. 3 on the elevator has a few blind canyons, but on the
whole things seem to be coming together pretty well. This forum is a
tremendous resource and is much appreciated.

The factory Elite brought the hinge pin out to the end of the elevator and
riveted a tab over the bent pin end. See
http://communities.msn.com/NWRebelExper ... am.msnw?ac
tion=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=42 for photo. You will have to get a longer hinge
pin to do this. I think that this is one area that probably will never need
to be replaced unless there is some major damage . The hinge pin is captive
in its installed configuration. I think in the very unlikely case I ever
need to remove it, I will either drill out the rivets attaching the hinge or
drill a 1/4 " access hole in from the outside and snake the pin out.

I installed my SR hinge line down. I drilled out the ribs to allow the
pin to extend to the end rib, bent pin 90 degrees and then added a loop.
I inserted a 1/8" screw through loop with a floating anchor nut on
inside of rib. The pin can be replaced with .100 ss music wire to get
the required length.

question on the installation of the trim tab
hinge.
