Batteries - leakage

Alistair noted that you shouldn't mount the battery over the elevator
cables because of possible leakage. GEL CEL BATTERIES DO LEAK11 I have
a gel cel mounted on the firewall inside the cabin on the right side
over the rudder cable return spring. I was still in the first taxi
stage, having had the battery sitting a long time during the final
stages of construction, and I guess it couldn't take the long periods of
low charge or just sitting. Anyway it developed a leak and corroded the
return spring. NOT A GOOD THING (tm)

So now like you I always check for leaks as part of my Daily.

inside of and vent the box.....Brian

Batteries - leakage

Your right there Brian! Howard had a nice stainless steel battery box that
he fabricated down at his metal fabricating company. When the battery
overcharged one day it ate through the sealer joining the box to the base
and made a real mess! Not a great place to try and work with baking soda,
water, etc and not get the mess all over you! We replaced the stainless box,
with one of the plastic marine battery holders, so if it "pukes" again it
will retain the mess. Provided of course the box is made from acid resistant
plastic and wasn't after market garbage!

Wayne G. O'Shea

Batteries - leakage

Hi Phil,
Interesting to hear you have had problems with leakage on a gel
cel battery, I have used aircraft standard Concorde gel cel battery's on our
Pitts for over a decade ( and it gets tipped every way possible) without any
sign of venting corrosion or leakage.

It was because of it's performance there that I decided to use that type in
the Rebel, I haven't regretted it so far.

I am annoyed that I have mounted the battery over the elevator cables
though, it will be a pain to have to shift it.

Cheers

Alister
