G'day!

I am fitting the wing tips and I would really appreciate some advice as to how to get them to sit properly.

I have aligned the wing tip rib with the trailing edge of the ailerons and the fairing box, but I am not at all sure as to how the wing tip should be aligned.


I have set the wing up flat on the work table and have laid the tip on the table also. Now here are the questions!

Should the centreline of the fibreglass tip sit at the same height as the wing centre line above the bench, and should that measurement continue around the corner?

Does the trailing edge of the tip lay flat on the bench?

Is there any wash-in or wash- out?

Any tips will be very much appreciated.

In hindsight THIS would be a better way than I did it !!!
(with the wing flat on the table WITH the tip as well)

I reckon YES at the front....but NO "around the corner"

Does the trailing edge of the tip lay flat on the bench?

YES

Is there any wash-in or wash- out?

NO

Ian....we just did some stall tests last Monday....two big guys, 120 lts fuel....and it handled just great . As the plane started to buffet....I was "waiting" for the right wing to drop.....but it didn't !
She just continued buffetting....sinking at around 1000 FPM,...but kept the wings level.
You'd think being a straight wing, high lift section with no washout, the "whole box and dice " would
just happen all at once....but it don't !?!

Looking forward to more flight testing....but it's on hold till a new oil cooler arrives :-(

Thanks for your responses. They were most helpful. The manual is not at all descriptive. Just a sketch or two would make all the difference.

It is sometimes rather difficult to explain what the problem is. What I now propose to do is just as you suggested. I will lay the tip flat at the trailing edge, and align the centre line of the tip with the centre line of the wing, and let the side lay where it will.

I assume that as you are doing some stalling tests, you have got the Rebel flying. How is it going? Is it fun? What sort of numbers are you getting?

Its reassuring to know that handling of the Rebel is without surprises! A gentle mush at stall is reassuring!
The Challenger that I have stalls the same way, except with power on!

Hi Ian !

Guess it'd be a bit expensive for shipping, but if you fellows
would like to improve the looks and performance of your Rebels, or
someone wants to save a LOT of building time, you should have a
look at the Hoerner wing tips that Dave Fife supplies ....

They will reduce stall by about 2 mph, increase cruise by
about 2 mph, and reduce takeoff distance by over 20 % !! They also
improve low speed handling, according to those who are using them
here. They are beautifully finished, ready to slip onto the wings,
requiring only light sanding & painting.

He also supplies a set of 3 beautiful tail tips - this might be
too late for you, but anyone else down there building a Rebel might
want to save time & effort.

Ian !.....I forgot to mention.....I'm pretty sure I trimmed quite a bit off each tip until the shape
of "the hole" matched the shape of the end of the wing.....
If you don't do this, there will be quite a bit of "buckling" of the edge of the tip where it sits
along the end of the wing.....(I did this stuff a few years back though).

I've only done two hours in 541R as yet...and now I have an oil cooler problem.(new one on order)
so I can't fly again until said cooler is replaced :-(

The stuff I've done so far is very pleasing though....really looking forward to those big trips away !
