Hello!

I may be able to get a Subaru EA-81 fairly cheaply that has been in another
a/c and reportedly did well. Not knowing (trusting) the seller, I'd be
inclined to buy the engine and then have it inspected and rebuilt where
necessary. What all is involved in this process and how much do you think
all
this might cost in the worst case? Any other suggestions?

I'll also be at Arlington wearing a black 'Northwest Motor Welding' hat.

Thanks,
Dan

I definitely would not bother with this one !! The cost might be
your whole Rebel !!

The EA-81 is a little too small for the Rebel. Only in the 80 hp.
range, usually (although I see much higher claims!). This puts it in
the same class as the Rotax 912, but it weighs almost twice as much,
with heavier mounts, rad, re-drive, etc. Being unsupported by the
Murphy factory, or ANY Subaru converter means that you are ON YOUR OWN
for engine mounts, cowling, rad, etc., etc. .... This is VERY SERIOUS !!

There are about a dozen Rebels now flying with Subaru Legacy
engines (2.2 or 2.5 litres), which gives you 130 to 185 hp., depending
on the converter and computer used.

I have flown a Rebel with a Crossflow Engineering Legacy
conversion of about 165 hp. - it worked very well !! The Rebel belongs
to Rick Abbott from Newfoundland, and he plans to fly it to Oshosh
this year, on Murphy 1800 Amphibs. He has been flying it for a couple
of years, and is very happy.

Crossflow supply a complete firewall-forward package for the REBEL,
including mounts, rad, re-drive, even electrical connections & engine
instruments. They have Legacy's from 150 to 200 hp.,
and 6 cyl. SVX's for the Super Rebel, from 250 to 300 hp.

While much progress is being made on the auto conversion front,
the vast majority of Rebel builders are using the Lycoming O-235, the
Rotax 912, or the Lycoming O-320 (for floats). These engines are well
supported, well proven, and easy to install.

Risking years of work building an aircraft on the strength of
an unusual, unsupported engine conversion is not something most Rebel
builders want to do ! Thank goodness there ARE a few brave experimenters
who WILL take a risk to advance our sport - are you one of them ??

This is similar to the insurance question !! Most Rebel builders
now purchase FULL HULL, & LIABILITY Insurance for their REBELS (at least
for the first year ...). We JUST CAN'T afford to lose all that effort,
and the money, after years of work.
