Hello everyone. Just thought I would give a heads up for the latest Rotax
912/914 Service Bulletin. (the last one was the stators)

MANDATORY - SB-912-022 amd SB-914-022
Replacement of the valve spring Retainers, on Single Valve Spring
configuration engines.

For the 912UL engines this covers all serial numbers between 4,401.880 to
4,404.123 (I'm lucky enough to own 4,401.883 in my wife's CH701!)

For 912ULS engines 4,425.001 to 4,426.604

912ULSFR engines 4,429.501 to 4,429.597

For the 914UL engines this covers all serial numbers between 4,417.598 to
4,417.977

Also applies to certain serial numbers of "certifed" 912A, F, S and 914F's,
and any engine that has been overhauled/repaired and converted to the single
valve spring configuration!

Apparently valve spring retainers can crack when engine is first started
after an oil purging or new engine installation due to air filled hydraulic
lifters. Parts are free until Feb 1st, 2002. contact you local Rotax dealer

Wayne,

I contacted Rotax in BC several weeks ago about this service bulletin and
they told me to call back in a few months for parts, as they were working on
supplying all the certified engines first. Guess I didn't give them enough
money the first time! Or maybe my life isn't as valuable as a certified
engine pilot.

Bruce, I haven't tried to get the parts yet! As a matter of fact I waited
till the last week or so to get the "free" stator for Leah's engine and it
is still riding around in the plane in it's shipping box, so it cost me the
deposit, as I obviously never returned the old one (does that suit
compliance, as it is in the plane!) Engine only has 25 hours on it, and is
hangered, so I wasn't too worried about the stator corrosion problem, but
thought I better get the parts when almost free instead of the $800 retail
price for the stator.

The valve spring retainers are supposed to be free, as well as 2 hours shop
time to do the work at your dealer. If you do it yourself you must buy a $35
(Cdn) tool to compress the spring with and a piece of rope to stuff the
cylinder with to hold the valves in place. MUCH safer than using compressed
air and the tool is probably a good thing to add to the tool box anyhow.

As for the certified thing! It is because the S.B. has a 10 hour compliance
window, so of course all the flight schools with Katanas are grounded until
the retainers are changed!

If I remember the SB correctly, if your not certified and you have over 100
hours on the engine, you have until the next oil change (which would be 47
hours for me because I just changed it) or until December 31, 2001.
