Float/Ski attach points

Post by Kim, Sarah, and Mike Kimb » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:55 pm

I hope to place my SR on floats and skis eventually and wonder if the list can provide advice as to hard point attachments that might be easier to install now, while I am building the fuselage. Murphy says that they don't use a "pork chop" attachment where the main gear goes. (This looks like someone just chopped off standard landing gear legs leaving a pork chop shaped hard point to attach the floats.) They use something else which requires some minor modification and can be retrofitted later. Why not use a "pork chop" attachment?

What about ski attachments? I was looking at some Wipaire skis on a Husky and there appears to be attachment points at the firewall, bottom of the lift strut, and somewhere farther back on the fuselage, along with the expected main attachment at the wheel axle. Is this a standard setup? It would be nice to prepare the hardpoints now. Anyone have any advice as to what material to use for the hardpoints, size, placement, etc.?

Hi Mike !

The prototype SR3500 has the front float fittings installed.
They are mounted above the main gear leg. I imagine these will be
available from the factory as soon as they install the first set of
amphibs and prove out the installation. They look easy to fit after-
the-fact.

They have heavy tangs front & back, with bolt holes. These
look like they'd be perfect to attach the safety cables & bungees
for skis to, as well. (The installation you describe on the Husky
sounds unnecessarily complex ...)

All the answers should come this year - I'd just hold off
a while, as everyone will have the same retrofit considerations.
The amphib design is well along, and we might even see one at
Oshkosh !!
