SR Landing Gear Mod

OK. I'm dense. I can't quite figure out the landing gear mod. It looks like it would be clear what to do if you were performing the mod on a completed airplane. Doing the mod at the right point in new construction is confusing me. If anyone can help, here are my questions:

Are FUS-87 and FUS-524 parts that are part of the original design or are they new, as part of the mod?

Can anyone give me an idea of what point in the construction this should be done?

Is there a good reason for including the access plate described in the mod, or is the access plate only needed for completed airplanes to get to the area in question?

Unrelated question: I've looked through all my parts and cannot find FUS-347, even though my inventory says I have it. These are the float attach brackets. Does anyone know what alloy, temper, and thickness of aluminum was used so I can make my own? If it's 6061-T6 I think that is what I can get at the local metal yard. I want to keep working and don't want to wait and pay for MAM to send me more.

FUS-347 is a 2"x2" tube 4 7/8" long with 11
holes on 2 sides. Don't know the spec.

SR Landing Gear Mod

by Rob Helt
Hi Mike;
Fus 87 and Fus 524 are part of the mod which has been available since last May. Apparently on the Murphy site they posted another service bulletin on the Under Carriage Drag Load Modification on March of 2001 but this is the same as the bulletin posted and received by SR builders in May of 2000. The pictures show that FUS 524 look like they are made of aluminum however in my mod kit they are made of stainless. It was easiest to install the mod at the stage where the torsion box is still open with the sill in place. Be careful that when you drill out FUS 87, make sure that Fus 524 is against the sill otherwise it will sit to high and the shear forces will be transferred along the rivets. This will then make the mod useless. If you are getting the 3500 upgrade kit I have received some pictures from Brian which show more work in this area as well so you may want to wait and do everything together. The access plate is only needed for completed floors.
Fus 347 are the float attach brackets which are included with your kit. If not received you should let Murphy know as they are very good at sending missing products quickly and with no charge. It doesn't mention in the manual but after these are fitted the should be riveted in place as doing it later is more difficult. Hope this helps

Mike, and ALL !

FWIW, I would put in <every> access plate & hole you think you might
EVER need, while building. You never know when you might have to check
something on a trip, and it's MUCH easier if you already have a cover.
(been there, done that :-( )
