What type of battery John and what kind of box is it in. I use to have a
cheater wire/connection in Howard's CYP for just that (well more so when he
left the master on)... and he boiled the battery over once.. or twice...

Hello group, My Rebel's battery is way back in the tail cone for wt&bal
reasons. This makes it very inconvenient to get to, to put the charger
cables on when wanting to trickle a little charge on while getting ready
to fly on a cold winter morning. I was thinking of running an "extension
cord" from the battery to just behind the pilot seat, where it would be
easier to reach and attach the charger cables. Any thoughts,
alternatives, suggestions? Thanks in advance. John

John,

You could install an external power receptacle in the skin closer to the
battery location........ since you'll be down there anyways. Then there
wouldn't be the need for the extension cord.

Here's a link to some useful battery TLC also

John,
A good quality battery tender plugged in all of the time will keep your battery up without having to worry about overcharging it. If you extend the cables forward be sure to fuse it at the battery. I have been using them for years and have found them to be a great investment. They add years of life to part time use batteries.

My battery is in the back to but I put the master solenoid on the inside
firewall and that's where I hook up charger or booster cables.

[rebel-builders] Battery Charging

Good day I am an old builder of an unfinished Rebel # 562 ( flying with a
good Partenavia P66C .. up to the 2000 Hrs of the O320 )
What Drew is describing is one of the most dangerous Master solenoid
position with respect to the battery position : the Master solenoid should
be very very closed to the positive terminal of the battery ( in the order
of few inches .. better less than 10 ) .
In case of any accidental short to ground of the long positive cable from
the rear battery position to the firewall , there is a possibility of
melting the aluminium and possibly a fire hazard as even a 25AH battery
can produce hundreds of amperes when shorted .
If you accept my 5 cents of contribution , move the Master ASAP !
Ciao

[rebel-builders] Battery Charging

Surprised the inspector passed that Drew. The battery contactor is
supposed to be located at the battery. It's true that heavy wire such as
4 awg or thicker will usually melt enough aluminum away to disconnect
any short circuit that might occur on it. Unfortunately the arcing tends
to start fires while that is occurring. Properly installed heavy wires
are low risk anyway except in a prang.

Generally up to a 5 amp (fused at the battery) circuit is considered
acceptable for feeding a clock, electronic keep alive circuits, etc. and
some folks put a battery maintainer on that line. I like the Schumacher
1.5 amp units for about US$20. from Wall Mart. A cigarette lighter
socket on that line can be useful for powering hand held devices.

Anything larger than 5 amps and the recommendation is to put another
relay at the battery. Some guys place a mini $4. automotive relay at the
battery that closes any time a battery charger is connected to the
"extension cord" that is in place to charge the battery. That way those
wires are also zero risk in the event of a prang or fire. This can even
be wired to a cigarette lighter socket but then you might want to wire
the relay to close when either the master switch was on OR a battery
charger was plugged in to make it more useful.

Now if we move into the modern world of engines that require electricity
to run then it makes a lot of sense to put fuses at the battery for
whatever the electronics requires as I don't like extra relays,
contactors, or failure points between me and the computer/fuel pump that
keeps my engine running. With an aft mounted battery I personally would
consider it reasonable to have the battery contactor forward and take
the battery circuits to the engine off the live side of the contactor.
So maybe you are just way ahead of the game Drew and have subconsciously
prepared for one of these new fangled EFI engines :)

Hi John,
I extended the plug that came with my float charger to just forward of the rear comp. bulkhead.
I keep thinking I'd like an adaptor similar to what the Nascar guys use. The plug looks like heavyduty headset plugs and the jacks could be easily mounted on the outside and covered.
Just a thought

My battery is also in the back of my aircraft. After climbing back every
time I wanted to hook up my float charger I installed two color coded plugs
on the side of the aircraft. I can now plug in my charger when I need to.
Works great.

OK John forget that I suggested that. My battery was on the firewall
when the plane was first inspected so that's how it passed. I guess TC
should have snagged it when they inspected my engine change but they
didn't so I've gone the last 14 years or so blissfully ignorant and
somehow survived. I recently changed the battery cable from #4 to #2 to
get better starter performance and the old cable I removed was in new
condition. It makes sense to move the relay back to the battery but I
think for me it makes even more sense to move the battery back to the
firewall and carry a jug of water for ballast when lightly loaded. Ken
I'm in that modern world I have Emag electronic ignition replacing both
mags so I need electrical power to start my engine.

Hi John

I'd fit a fuse or circuit breaker at the battery box just in case your
extension lead shorts to earth !!

If you make it about 10A it will support a trickle charge but still protect
against a short in your lead

Thank you all for your suggestions. I had thought of the danger of shorting and planned to put a fuse on the hot wire. The recommendations on size are interesting
and will bear some thought.

I'll mull it all over for a while, then let you know what I decide and how it turns out.

Thanks again.
