[rebel-builders] Seats

Yes John... if the pan was drilled to the front of the tubes.. it puts those
holes in tension and they break. Happened to mine as well a few years ago.
You can pull it apart and insert a splice tube or one over top.. which ever
is easier/readily available.

Well, last summer, I leaned back pretty heavily on the seat back and felt
a little pop. Since then the seat has been leaning a bit farther back than
originally and today I finally got around to pulling the seat to have a
look.

Is this old hat to all of you? Sorry, I can't get the archives to work
for me.

Anyway, the tubular frame of the of the horizontal part of the seat is
snapped just ahead of where the gussets are welded. The fracture passes
through a rivet hole. I am just wondering if there is an official fix for
this, or shall I improvise? Improvising would probably entail drilling out
the other seat pan holding rivets, then sliding a piece of tube up the
inside of the broken tube and position it to bridge the fracture. Then
re-rivet the seat pan. I'll try to position the inner tube so its end is
not too close to a rivet hole, to minimize stress concentration. Any
thoughts/suggestions appreciated. JohnToronto

Hi John had the same thing happen to two of my seats. I cut the seats apart
and inserted a 9/16 by .065 wall sleeve in both sides (had to turn it down a
little on the lathe) and then put a heaver 5/8 by .058 tube across the back.
I modified the seats in my new project this way. I also cover the frames
with Ceconite 101 instead of Aluminum I'll try to put some pictures in the
Rebel list files or I'll try to e-mail you some.

Sorry to hear of your problem, John. At least you're not alone. Given the
list message archives aren't working... it's probably worth noting again in
this thread, for those who are new to the list and/or still building seats,
that your unfortunate tale is, of course, one more bit of evidence
supporting the use of canvas slings instead of the std. tin pans with all
those rivet holes -- at least in new construction -- as often mentioned
here before.
