They are "air rails" not spray rails. They help get some turbulence under
the floats and allow the floats to break the water surface quicker with them
on. I cut the outboard one down by an inch before installing...but yes they
can be a PITA on some docks!

Been flying with mine for 10+ years, and dock with them all the time,
without interference or damage. That's what tires and dock bumpers are for.
They are well below the water line, too, so not usually in a position where
they would contact a dock side.

Also, I believe they help with water take-offs, by providing some extra lift
at the step. Can't say that for sure, but that is a theory I have heard. I
do know that one of the local guys here does not have them, and his water
performance is not as good. However, he may have other issues, too, that
cause that.

I will agree, however, that you have to be careful around them in the
hangar, or you will cut your shins. Usually that only happens once or twice,
before you learn.

I haven't bent mine on the floating dock yet but they are hard on shins if you're not careful. I used a file to make sure the edges were rounded off as much as possible.

In 2007 the ramblers visited the factory and Daryl had changed the form of
the spray rails from a custom formed compound curve style to a straight
piece and IIRC eliminated the outside rails. I was in the midst of
repairing mine so eliminated the outside one and replicated the new inside
ones. I'm not skilled enough to be sure it makes no real difference but
that is the sense I get, and no shin scars.
