Help !!

Is there anyone in Southern Ontario who has a composite
tailspring who'd like to trade me for a metal one ??? We had a
really heavy wind storm here last week, and the composite spring
on my Rebel was sheared off right behind the tail strut supports.

This was one of the middle batch of springs, and was VERY
poor quality - mostly epoxy, with little glass, 'way too thick
in the middle, etc., but I made it fit. I'd still prefer to use
a composite spring on this Rebel, as it's a very light 912-powered
version, and the metal spring just wouldn't bend AT ALL on it !!

Hope someone has one of these composite springs, so I can
get the Rebel up out of the grass quickly !

Thats my thought also, thats the reason it's still on there. But I do have a
metal spring on hand to do a change out. You were a good excuse to get it
done.

Phil,

Thanks for thinking about me. I'd just leave that composite
spring on there - just keep an eye on it for delamination. If it's
one of the early ones, it should last for 8 years or so before you'll
see some cracks. Even then, it goes gradually, over several months,
so there's lots of warning. Often, you can just put a gear clamp
around it and go for a few more months - or just get home from a
trip ! ;-)

That would be great ! There's a small wrinkle in the fabric
at the rudder base - nothing serious. Will have a better look at
everything while I'm replacing the tailspring. Hopefully in better

to purchase an aluminum one so I did, but have not swapped them out yet.

like I'll be Ok !! (Don't throw that one away, though ! ;-) )

I like the 'bounce' in the composite springs, especially
with the light-weight Rebels. They do have to be shortened a bit,
and need watching for delamination, as the quality of the later
ones is poor ...

The metal spring is likely the best way to go for heavier
Rebels (O-320's, etc....), although they don't look like they
have much 'bounce', they <do> bend.

Hi There

I changed from a composite to the aluminium tailspring after I became
concerned about possible fracture. The main reason that I changed however
is that the pronounced flex of the glass tailskid caused me problems with
the tailwheel attach. I landed in Sarnia awhile ago & had to go pick up my
tailspring (from a Scott 3200) which was in the middle of the runway. It
was not a hard landing, ( although I have plenty), but could feel there was
a problem. If the tailskid flexes too much it will cause the chain/spring
connection to let go. This was causing me problems during ground handling &
was having problems getting it adjusted so that I could kick the tailwheel
out but not have it too tight so that it would be high loads on the rather
light rudder bearings.

When I changed to the aluminium spring, my tailwheel/tailspring problems
disappeared but the ride was alot rougher. When taxiing, (SPELLING?), I
could hear & feel the shock & drum soundings coming from the tailcone &
stiff tailskid combo. Win in one area & lose in another! Now I taxi alot
slower.
