Hi John
Greenlea knockouts are the answer if you can get a hand in behind. I have a large variety of sizes so let me know what you need and if I've got that size we can arrange to get it to you.
Did you get your prop back ?
Happy New Year

I am just a bit worried that the saw may start to "walk" sideways in the thin aluninum of the float.

So, here I am, looking for re-assurance, or alternative suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks Angus. That's very helpful. It's a 2" hole I need. I can get in behind. I have thought of mounting the cups in the access plates, so if I blow it, I only have to replace the plate. Maybe thats too timid of me.

It might also be easier for me to rent the knock outs locally than to get yours from London/St.Thomas.

The prop is still MIA, but I'll contact you off list about that.

Thanks again.

John

Thanks for the reference. The computer I'm on right now has no sound, but I'll have a close look and listen when I get home.

I notice the aluminum sheet he is using is relatively heavy. The float skins in question are 20 thou, which is why I worry about walking and tearing. I did some practice holes in pop can aluminum, ~5 thou, that worked out ok. I had to keep a fair amount of stretch-tension on the sheet to minimize digging and tearing.

I've also thought of cutting a plug, the size of the inside diam. of the hole saw and attaching it to the float where I want the holes. This would provide more guidance and support than the drill mandrel alone. That would prevent walk, but not tear.

Or maybe I'm just over thinking this.

Thanks for your help. All suggestions are welcome..

Hi john if your floats were built to plans there should be a drain hole in each of those compartments to the large compartment in front of the step. Maybe you just need to clean out the drain holes.

As Drew points out.. gonna be a tight place to get a cup and hose up high.

I won't say anymore on the drain to main compartment issue, etc, as I don't
want anything in type to be construde as ridicule against the last two
companies that worked on these floats for John. We've talked about it in
person and the main solution is to solve the leakage into these side
compartments.

I've not seen this written anywhere before but an old AME told me that one
of the best ways to track down leaks
is to use a compressed air nozzle to blow on all the rivet heads and seams
from the outside, and have someone watch
for bubble sources inside the compartment. While I have not yet tried it on
these side compartments, it holds some
promise and I will try it in the spring because I too have a few little
leaks.

Wayne, you are 100% right...I should solve the leak problem. But better men than I have tried, and failed, or at least it came back. Eventually the compartment will be filled with pro-seal or whatever the sealant-du-jour is. Some future industrial archeologist will be able to document the trends in sealant evolution on the basis of my one small compartment. It is only the one that leaks.

In the meantime, I want to be able to pump them out and be sure.

As mentioned in the previous post, they can be set up to drain into neighbouring compartments, but that allows a small leak in a small compartment to flood a big compartment. Not ideal either.

Thanks for the input.

John

John, which small compartment is leaking? I have one, too, on the right
float by the main gear. I think it is coming from the gear attachment bolt.
I have been meaning to put a doubler in there, one of these years, to
strengthen it, as some others here have done. But for now I just let it
drain into my main compartment through the drilled hole. It is not a big
leak, maybe a couple cups in a day sitting on the water. All my other
compartments are still tight.

[rebel-builders] Holes for Float Pump-outs

Hi Walter,

Sounds similar. Pilots side, outboard of wheelwell. Will take on ~2 gallons overnight. Must be at the very bottom of the float because all the water drains if left on land. There is evidence of several previous attempts at fixing, but I think, as you suspect that the gear "works" it a bit when on wheels, and re-opens whatever is leaking. Now that I know it has leaked, and can leak, I'd like to be able to pump out all compartments.

As you recall, I'm quite heavy, and tend to fly "near gross" . I'd rather have an extra 20 lbs of fuel, than water.

Hope you are well.

John

[rebel-builders] Holes for Float Pump-outs

by Walter Klatt
Yeah, that's a lot, mine isn't that bad, yet. I also don't think you should
be adding extra pump-outs for that. Better to drain into the main
compartment through a drilled hole as designed. But with that amount of
leak, you need to fix it, for good.

Garry, weren't you having trouble with a similar leak? Can't remember how
you fixed yours.

I got talked into taking apart my rear main gear cylinders on the floats to
upgrade the O-rings and re-machine the grooves (plus adding a 2nd one) on
the front hydraulic fittings. I had a leak on one a couple years, and fixed
it with a new O-ring. Mine were not actually leaking right now. But Dennis
(the machinist) decided to do his, and so while he had his CNC programmed
and set up to do them, I decided to take advantage of the opportunity.

Luckily, the weather has been warm, as it is not fun working through those
access covers to take apart your cylinders. Anyway, got them back together
yesterday, so now just have to get the air worked out of the lines. Will do
that today. And I better not find any leaks now....

And just got my medical yesterday (yahoo, I passed) again, too, so am good
with that for another 2 years.

Walter

Hi Walter,

Sounds similar. Pilots side, outboard of wheelwell. Will take on ~2 gallons
overnight. Must be at the very bottom of the float because all the water
drains if left on land. There is evidence of several previous attempts at
fixing, but I think, as you suspect that the gear "works" it a bit when on
wheels, and re-opens whatever is leaking. Now that I know it has leaked, and
can leak, I'd like to be able to pump out all compartments.

As you recall, I'm quite heavy, and tend to fly "near gross" . I'd rather
have an extra 20 lbs of fuel, than water.

Hope you are well.

John

John, which small compartment is leaking? I have one, too, on the
right float by the main gear. I think it is coming from the gear
attachment bolt.
I have been meaning to put a doubler in there, one of these years, to
strengthen it, as some others here have done. But for now I just let
it drain into my main compartment through the drilled hole. It is not
a big leak, maybe a couple cups in a day sitting on the water. All my
other compartments are still tight.

Wayne, you are 100% right...I should solve the leak problem. But
better men than I have tried, and failed, or at least it came back.
Eventually the compartment will be filled with pro-seal or whatever the
sealant-du-jour is.
Some future industrial archeologist will be able to document the
trends in sealant evolution on the basis of my one small compartment.
It is only the one that leaks.

In the meantime, I want to be able to pump them out and be sure.

As mentioned in the previous post, they can be set up to drain into
neighbouring compartments, but that allows a small leak in a small
compartment to flood a big compartment. Not ideal either.

Thanks for the input.

John

[rebel-builders] Holes for Float Pump-outs

I had some pretty good leaks around the gear attach bolts. My darling wife Janet was able to fix them by slathering a bunch of sikaflex around and over the nuts. I can't even get my forearm through the inspection hole let alone do any work in those compartments.
