[rebel-builders] Strut Fairings ?

Post by Ron Shannon » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:36 pm

Nigel,

I got mine from MAM a long time ago. ((http://n254mr.com/node/1777) Whether
MAM has any more... dunno.

I also have a pair of gray plastic saucer-like pieces to cover the spring
gear-to-fuse connection, but I haven't installed them yet.

Talking about wing tips etc..., does anyone know of a fibreglass set of
fairings available suitable for the Elite to go on the top and bottom of
each wing strut ?

Thanks
Nigel

[rebel-builders] Strut Fairings ?

Post by Ron Shannon » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:36 pm

Charlie,

Not sure what else I could tell you, except the fiberglass strut fairings
have split flanges on the back side that are held together with short 6 -32
stainless screws and fiber nuts, and they took a fair amount of sanding to
snuggle up to the fuse.

On the upside, they look nice, and I'm pretty sure they yield at least
another 1.071 MPH in cruise, maybe a whole lot more. (As Garry W. would
say, "I don't know, but I'm not sure.") On the down side, I have to start
my descents a lot earlier, and will probably have to get speed brakes. ;-)

Let me know if you'd like photos of the back sides. The strut fairings (and
a whole lot more) are off the plane right now, as I'm getting ready to take
the wings off for the dreaded tank repairs, and then painting.

Ron

[rebel-builders] Strut Fairings ?

Hi Charlie !

Those are the original MAM fiberglass strut fairings.
The lip on the outer end should be cut off with a dremel
wheel to make them flush... A lot of work to finish & fit,
but I think they are nicer than the metal fairings that
replaced them.... template supplied with later kits ...

They MIGHT still have the molds for those fairings,
might be worth asking ... email to: Shipping@murphyair.com
Probably not cheap - and there ARE <4 >different fairings -
each is unique.

FYI - By request, another photo of the four (4) MAM fiberglass strut
fairings, off the plane, is at http://n254mr.com/node/1845, showing the
"split flanges" on the back side of each one.
