G'day Everyone !

Thanks for the many informative answers to our questions regarding the "Tailwheel Mods"
and the ground handling handles.

1) It appears we HAVE the "Tailwheel Mod" ....as we have a full swivelling tailwheel.....
I assumed that there was a modification that had to be done to the full swivelling wheel to make
it work correctly....apparently not (apart from leaving the springs loose...HOW LOOSE ?)

Point : With the tail of the Rebel suspended in the air (so the wheel is off the deck)....depressing
the rudder pedal fully to either side DOESN'T rotate the tailwheel anywhere near enough
to make it "break free" ??? ..........is this normal ?

I would have assumed that the tailwheel should break free just as the rudder gets to
it's full deflection point.....yes / no ?

2) It seems that Ground handling handles are the preferred method....less hassles with stressing
the rear end of the plane.

Does anyone out there have a diagram for making these retractable handles ?
(I could whip one up out of the top of my head ...but I'd really like to see other points
of view as well).

Hope you guys liked the pic's of our shrouded tailwheel assembly !

Hi Rick !

1. How loose .... about 1/2" of sag ...

Sounds normal - it's the extra side load from the turn
that will force the tailwheel over farther, then 'kick' it out. Part
of the trick is to start the turn with a bit of extra speed, then stab
on a bit of brake on the 'in' side, to tighten the turn and help force
the tailwheel to disengage.

2. The handles I've seen are pipes extending out from the sides
of the fuselage, about half-way up, secured to the bulkhead in front
of the stabilizer. There are doubler plates on the fuse sides, and the
tubes have pins on the inner ends, so they can be pushed into the
fuse and half-turned to lock in the retracted position. Gord Mohr
and Keith Kinden both sell very nicely made kits for these.

Rick,

A set of these retractable handles, Bob P. described, came with my "resale
kit," so I installed them and am pleases with the way they worked. I don't
know how much they cost but I can bet, from looking at mine, you would be
better off buying a pair rather than trying to design and build your own.
