Sorry guys.. been away for a few days, enjoying some much needed laughs
fishing the Bay of Quinte.

Not sure when I can get on this, but I need to at least get a pair of wings
gutted and new tanks built for them first..... before getting too seriously
into building engine mounts.

In the next few days I'll sit down and get serious about a 4130 tube order
together. I also need to get a smaller TIG torch so that I can get into the
tube clusters better than I would be able to with the head I currently have.

One thing.. and a choice you have... with the conical mount, is whether you
are going to be running a speed cowling or the nose bowl and 4 doors. I have
made the jig to make two different mount heights. There is one engine
position to match the speed cowling prop position and another 2" lower for a
nice nose bowl and doors cowling. This allows the nose cowling to slope down
from windshield to nose bowl giving a much improved look to the nose and
also a better view from the pilots seat.

Not sure if I can actually spend the $ at this time, but curious...

Will same mount fit an Elite?

Will same mount fit 320 / 360?

Approximate cost if above scores at least a 50% yes score.

Hope you did some "catching" as well as "fishing"!

Yes Norm.. the Elite and Rebel both use the same mounts.

The lads are looking for Conical mounts this first round and I'll take a
shot at them first as there isn't another source TTBOMK, as the factory
claims they lost the jig. The dynofocal is still available from the factory
and at least one mail list individual as well. I would name him but not sure
he's currently wanting any extra work load. If he is.. he is welcome to
speak up. I did make my jig to do both the dynofocal and conical mount, by
using bolt on inserts that attach to my 600lb tool and die / welding table.
I'm not building these on a sheet of plywood.

Norm, Marc...

As for cost, I won't be able to nail that down until I've got my steel in
hand and at least get one done to see how many hours go into it. I'm told
4130 tube is/has gone up over 4 times in price because Dillisburg has shut
down sales operations and with him gone, other supply houses will be looking
for smaller production runs and fewer mills are willing to make it .. the
price is going thru the roof.

If I get some made I'll leave it to the builder to source their own Lord
mounts unless they really want me to supply them. No point in me having to
mark up the cost to cover my time, etc. The dynafocal mount uses the Barry
Mount 94150-40 and the Conical should be used with the solid insert
aerobatic rubbers J-6230-1 and they are EXPENSIVE! I bought some from
Leavens many moons ago and they were the + side of $165 each x 4. Aircraft
Spruce currently lists them at $127.95 each Cdn x 4 required for install.

Marc...

Nose bowl, there are many that work nice. Piper bowl MC-3A has starter bump,
MC-3B has no starter bump and some other guys like the Thorpe T18 bowl =
MC-4

Hi Wayne,
Hope the fishing and the break was good!
I have a speed cowl.
I had thought I could use these
http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/e ... ushing.php at $40USD
total. Airraft Spruce says these are superior to traditional Lyc bushings.
Do you know if these inexpensive ones are lousy? Or is your comparison
to Lyc bushings?

Thanks,

[rebel-builders] 0320 conical mount

Issue with using the cheap plain rubber bushings is with the MAM motor mount
the rear intake tubes will hit the motor mount. I am going to see if I can
move the two rear motor mount tubes a bit to get away from this issue, but
unsure at this point if I actually can. With the MAM mount you have to space
the motor out, on about 1/4" to 5/16ths thick of washers to get clearance,
or you can just use the solid steel insert lord rubbers I previously
mentioned. The insert ones also keep your engine from sagging over time. I
changed mine for the very first time last fall (15 years!) when I pulled all
4 of my cylinders because it was easy to do with the cylinders out of the
way. They really didn't appear to need changing.. but I did it as preventive
maintenance. Plain rubber ones would have been toast many moons ago. If you
are willing to space the motor out and change the rubbers every 5 years or
so... they work just fine Ben.

[rebel-builders] 0320 conical mount

Sounds good ...I'll probably start out cheap. If there's any bright side,
I'm hoping the straight mount bushings are easier to install/change than
the dynafocal. I helped with a dynafocal bushing change once, and those
angles made it a PITA. Good mount, but still, required a few band-aids
and expletives to do the job.

[rebel-builders] 0320 conical mount

Posted: Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:35 pm
by Wayne G. O'Shea
Well guys... I now have enough 4130 tube in house to build about 6 or 7
mounts and I have finally found some 1/8" thick washers for the firewall and
engine bosses locally to give me what I need to get going. I also have a
good selection of ER80S-D2 filler rod on hand to match various weld
thicknesses. With everyone "hopping up" their engines these days, I've also
gone one thickness heavier on the mount tubes than Murphy used and it will
also make it easier for me to weld properly as a bonus.

I still have to get over to the local welding supply house and get a smaller
TIG torch and a few supplies before I can proceed on these mounts though.

So once I've got my torch, and the ribs prosealed into these wing tanks that
I'm rebuilding, I'll try to work in some tube fitting while I wait for the
proseal to cure on the tanks.

I'll start out by making one of each mount style.. ie: speed cowling and a 2
" lower thrust line for the bowl/doors cowling (for the conical engine
only). Once I see how much time goes into them I'll be able to set a price.
Once I've done that I'll also be able to set a price for a dynafocal mount
as well... I do have one "ring" here at the current time to make a
dynafocal, but as I said before you can currently buy them direct from
Murphy ($950) and also another member here can/could also build them for
you.

[rebel-builders] 0320 conical mount

by Simon Smith
Hi Wayne I've ordered more Dynafocal rings and tube so I can build mounts
again if any body is interested they can contact me at siksc37@gmail.com or
by phone at 608-289-6936. My jig is a metal one and can weld a standard or a
2 " lower thrust line.

Well guys... I now have enough 4130 tube in house to build about 6 or 7
mounts and I have finally found some 1/8" thick washers for the firewall
and
engine bosses locally to give me what I need to get going. I also have a
good selection of ER80S-D2 filler rod on hand to match various weld
thicknesses. With everyone "hopping up" their engines these days, I've
also
gone one thickness heavier on the mount tubes than Murphy used and it will
also make it easier for me to weld properly as a bonus.

I still have to get over to the local welding supply house and get a
smaller
TIG torch and a few supplies before I can proceed on these mounts though.

So once I've got my torch, and the ribs prosealed into these wing tanks
that
I'm rebuilding, I'll try to work in some tube fitting while I wait for the
proseal to cure on the tanks.

I'll start out by making one of each mount style.. ie: speed cowling and a
2
" lower thrust line for the bowl/doors cowling (for the conical engine
only). Once I see how much time goes into them I'll be able to set a
price.
Once I've done that I'll also be able to set a price for a dynafocal mount
as well... I do have one "ring" here at the current time to make a
dynafocal, but as I said before you can currently buy them direct from
Murphy ($950) and also another member here can/could also build them for
you.

Yes Norm.. the Elite and Rebel both use the same mounts.

The lads are looking for Conical mounts this first round and I'll take a
shot at them first as there isn't another source TTBOMK, as the factory
claims they lost the jig. The dynofocal is still available from the
factory
and at least one mail list individual as well. I would name him but not
sure
he's currently wanting any extra work load. If he is.. he is welcome to
speak up. I did make my jig to do both the dynofocal and conical mount,
by
using bolt on inserts that attach to my 600lb tool and die / welding
table.
I'm not building these on a sheet of plywood.

Norm, Marc...

As for cost, I won't be able to nail that down until I've got my steel in
hand and at least get one done to see how many hours go into it. I'm told
4130 tube is/has gone up over 4 times in price because Dillisburg has
shut
down sales operations and with him gone, other supply houses will be
looking
for smaller production runs and fewer mills are willing to make it .. the
price is going thru the roof.

If I get some made I'll leave it to the builder to source their own Lord
mounts unless they really want me to supply them. No point in me having
to
mark up the cost to cover my time, etc. The dynafocal mount uses the
Barry
Mount 94150-40 and the Conical should be used with the solid insert
aerobatic rubbers J-6230-1 and they are EXPENSIVE! I bought some from
Leavens many moons ago and they were the + side of $165 each x 4.
Aircraft
Spruce currently lists them at $127.95 each Cdn x 4 required for install.

Marc...

Nose bowl, there are many that work nice. Piper bowl MC-3A has starter
bump,
MC-3B has no starter bump and some other guys like the Thorpe T18 bowl =
MC-4

Wayne

Not sure if I can actually spend the $ at this time, but curious...

Will same mount fit an Elite?

Will same mount fit 320 / 360?

Approximate cost if above scores at least a 50% yes score.

Hope you did some "catching" as well as "fishing"!

All best!

Norm
