[rebel-builders] REAL SR2500/Moose flight data

Hi Rick !

Don't know about max, but CRUISE that I got was:

With the 260 hp. IO-540 ...

2500 and/or 3500 at 2,400 rpm, 24 inches, at 8,500 ft.,
----------------------- 132 - 135 Kt .... about 150+ mph ...
about 13 - 13.5 gph fuel

3500 M-14P I'll let someone more current answer -
------- --------- My fuzzy memory is 2,300 rpm ... about 120 Kt.
and about 18.5 gph .... never got less than
about 18 gph.......

There shouldn't be any big difference in cruise because of the
airframe - 2500 and 3500 are almost same aerodynamically ...
3500 has 10 mph higher VNE, and 500 lb. more gross weight..

These are just my memories of my experiences ... YMMV ;-)

Max speed with a Moose airframe and a M-14?

Thanks!

[rebel-builders] REAL SR2500/Moose flight data

I flew an IO-540 Moose with 3-blade Hartzell Rick...don't remember the exact
power settings, but it is in the 140 mph range if I recall correctly. The
streamlined cowl makes a big difference. I do remember that we were burning
17 gph though as I recall remarking about that.

I have over 500 hours on M-14 powered Moose. I've also flown side-by-side
with other M-14 powered Moose, so I know the #'s are correct. At 1220 prop
rpm ( 1850 engine rpm) and 24", with the 2-blade paddle prop, one sees about
110 knots average at no more than 14 to 14.5 gph. I have never, ever run it
past 16 gph--one doesn't get any more visible airspeed--one just
successfully burns more fuel <g>. I have a fuel totalizer that is precise,
spot-on, accurate. If it says I burned 63 gallons on a cross-country flight
then that is within a 1/10 g when I fill up. So I know the 14.0 to 14.5 gph
average is a solid number.

There is just NO WAY anyone with a Moose--without a turbine up front that
is--is crusing any more than say 120 knots. Not going to happen.

Ted

FYI

Not exactly what you are looking for, but I have an SR2500 with a 230 hp O-470-S.

I cruise at 135 MPH and burn 10 GPH (Imperial, not US) at 23^2.

Tom,
Thanks for the reply. If you open it up full throttle what kind of
airspeed do you get? I am trying to understand lots of engine-propeller
dynamics. Knowing what the top end people are really seeing helps.
