I have a new Garmin GTX 327 transponder and need to purchase an encoder for
it. Any recommendations that won't break the bank.

Can't recall what stage your project/plane is at, Roland, but If you have
or are planning an EFIS, it probably has an encoder data output which is
all you need.

Thanks Wayne and Ron,

I am not going EFIS at this point as I have all the steam gauges already.
Just now wiring the panel on the workbench. I bought the Garmin Transponder
and a Icom a210 at Sun n Fun this year. Another curiosity is that many
aircraft electronics indicate 14-28v range. Given that I am going automotive
with a 12 volt battery, will I have any issues?

[rebel-builders] Encoder Recommendation ?

Modern circuit components have made it easy for mfgr.'s to build equip.
with internal voltage regulation, rather than having to design and carry
separate models for the two different standard bus voltages. So if the gear
says it will work from 14-28VDC, it should work with either.

The apparent distinction between 12V and 14V is not a cause for concern
because, with a properly-sized alternator running at cruise RPM, the
voltage regulator in your nominal 12V system should be keeping the system
voltage at about 13.8-14 VDC and the mfgr's 14-28 VDC voltage spec is
referring to the high end of the voltage standards, not the low end. (FWIW,
most modern solid state equipment will continue to function at even lower
voltages, perhaps 10 VDC or less, except some voltage sensitive functions
like transmitter output or display lighting will be reduced.)

In short, equip. spec'd for 14-28 VDC should be fine.

I got a new Ameri-King about a year before our initial launch. It lasted
less than ten hours and because I had it over one year there was no
warrantee. The replacement was one of two recommended by a radio guy. I
will try to get you the names tomorrow.
I bought an ELT from Ameri-King as well. Had to send it back for an
upgrade. The tech guys seemed competent enough. It was a reasonable
price but in the end not that good of a deal for the hassle. They seem
to me to be very low budget.

Bob.

Hi Roland

I went for the ACK offering as I think it was lighter, and as my transponder
is a Mode S I chose the serial data out version to allow more precise height
information than the older parallel system (easier to wire as well :0)

Also a warning, some EFIS systems do not send fixed 1013/29.95 data but
instead the data for what ever QNH/QFE height you see on the EFIS screen so
unless you have 1013/29.95 set the ATC screen and TCAS/ACAS systems will
show you at the wrong height !!!!

Nig

(still waiting for paperwork to start test flying !!!!)

I agree with you on their ELT's Bob. Absolute JUNK! I have 6 of those
"duracell" battery style ELT's in the filing cabinet all with osillator
failure or worse. One was it's first time in for recert! If anyone here is
running one of those orange AK-450's... even though the red light comes on
during test it DOES NOT mean it actually can transmit a signal.

Wayne, I received an older AK ($500 to upgrade) with my kit. I will either
have to upgrade it to 406 or purchase new. What brand or type would you
recommend other than AK?

What we have is a ACK A-30 altitude encoder. I don't remember the price
but somewhere around $180.

Bob.
