[rebel-builders] Murphy Floats rigging

How long are your spreader bars? If they are around 75" long they will work
fine, But you will need to lower the plane down from the original Murphy
height. If you go with the strut length shown in the Murphy float manual
it will set to high, you need to lower the airplane down some. On spreaders
that are about 75" the belly of the plane should not be over about 24" above
the floats. The angle of the struts should be no less than 45 degrees and a
max of about 55 degrees. ( looking at the struts from the front of the
airplane)
I have flown both the original width floats and the narrower lower ones and
like the narrow ones better.
Keith

Gents,

I'm new to the forum. Just bought a set of 1800 amphibs previously rigged
for
a beefed up Kitfox. The spreader struts are cutted 9" shorter than Murphys
recommended width for a Rebel installation. Have heard that some
recommend the narrower width. Please point me in the correct direction for
the files or conference.

thx
Carl

Thanks Keith

I will measure them this weekend.

Stupid question but if I calculate the percentage of decrease in spreader bar Dia. And apply it to the struts I should still be within acceptable limits you would think?

Suggest you draw the diagram out to scale and do the math Carl.
Percentages will likely give the wrong answer since you are not also
shrinking the distance between the fuselage mounting points by a percentage.

Carl.. I make the spreaders 5" shorter (@ 79.25") than MAM's instructions
(at I believe 84 or so), to keep the strut angles the same.... as I shorten
the front struts by 3" from MAM's instructions. This strut length gives a
c/c distance between floats of 89". This spreader bar shortening amount
keeps the forward "view" angle the same so that the load transfer stays the
same into the fus cage, but at the same time you are decreasing the angle of
the front struts. The rear strut is straight and as you lower the airplane
the front strut needs to have a shallower rise from float attach to fus
attach and if you get too shallow you are asking for trouble. The lowering I
do, by making the struts 3" shorter, only lowers the aircraft about 2.5" and
at this point you are using the maximum that you're going to get away with
in respect to deflecting the supplied front strut attach fittings. As it is
they need to be milled/relieved so they will fit in the strut ID as they
aren't going in straight anymore, they are cocked. So while your spreaders
are currently 4" shorter than what I like to do, you are going to be limited
to about 3" shorter on the struts unless you custom make the forward strut
fittings.

Using percentage will not work, you will need to do a little math to get it
right.
