[rebel-builders] Covering Flapperon

Hi Charlie !

You should use spots of Poly-Tack all around and a few spots
in the middle. If you don't glue it down, it could bunch up ....

I'm assuming it is Polyester Batting (1/4 or 1/2" thick ...)

Not too much adhesive, because the air has to flow through
the batting & out .... to avoid pinholes in the fabric. Don't worry
about it touching the top wing skin - you can use a long piece
of slotted wood to bend it up - OR -- better yet, add Mylar tape
to the flapperon top front, to you can have a tight fit with
no wear. Anyplace that sells stuff for gliders will have the tape -
it's SOP for gliders .... air gaps are drag ....

the term "sufficient adhesive to secure the batten"? I would assume the
batten material should be able to move freely as the fabric is being heat
shrunk so it does not bunch up under the fabric?

[rebel-builders] Covering Flapperon

Hi Keith & Bob P.
As you can see there is a lot I don't know about using the polyester
padding. I have covered my Luscombe and J-3 wings over the years but the
fabric was cemented at both the leading and trailing edges (not a sewed
envelope). As I understand it, the padding can only be used under the fabric
when the fabric just wraps around the leading edge, it should not be used
under a overlapped cemented seam. The padding is supposed to provide an
escape route for the coating solvent vapors and prevent pinholes thru the
finish. The padding I am using is 1/8 thick but compress to .020 under load.
My concern was if I glued it down to well it might not be able to move
during the shrinking process and cause wrinkles in the fabric.
Thanks for help.

You've got the theory down, Charlie !

The batting I've used was a lot thicker, so the squeezing down took
care of any possible movement caused by shrinking .... might be
better to use thicker batting ... Believe that was the original
factory suggestion... Too thin, and it might be difficult for the
gasses to escape ..
