I was thinking of installing the bolts in the welded stop as well, but can
always do that after the fact if it really bothers me. I added the extra
section at the bottom of the panel and put my switches in the side section
without having the sticks installed. Worst case scenario is my knuckles get
bruised by the switches, but then again if I need to dive that steep I have
other things to worry about.. right!

Me too. I cut them as much as I could and still have the RAC stick
grips fit on them. See http://n254mr.com/node/1406 . I think you'll
find that's what most people have done. My grips still hit the panel's
slanted side sections... but only in what would amount to a strong
bank, heavy dive condition that's highly unlikely to ever be used.
