Subject: Re: [rebel-builders] tires, tube valve stem
FWIW on JDM wheels and 600x6 tires:
-oversize tubes soon leak if there is a fold in them
-the tire eventually rotates on the rim if less than industry standard
pressure which is about 24 to 26 psi. they go real flat real quick!
-wallmart (600x6x15?)tubes eventually leak, sometimes quickly once the
leak starts. If you look closely they have numerous nicks or little
imperfections. However they are cheap, available, and easy to change.
Carry a spare and two 7/16" wrenches. You will need a scissor jack, an 8
ft. long 2x6 lever under the axle, or two guys to lift the wing, all of
which are surprisingly easy to find when the need arises...
-Angus used certified straight stem tubes and wrapped a flexible truck
extension (from dual wheel setups) around the inside of the wheel and
out the valve hole. I have not tried that.
-Lastly I have actually seen a certified bent stem 600x6 tube but I
choked on the price which was over $100. each.
Ken
noticed that the ID of the tube is at least 1 inch bigger than the OD of
the wheel, with air pumped in, or not. Maybe this is unimportant,
because the tube will fill all the space with the tire on. But I'm
wondering if this could lead to the tire working the tube around to the
point of breaking off the valve stem .and one would not likely see this
until stem failure. I've had this problem on my ultralight, although
that suggests other causes because there, the tube is a better fit to
the OD of the wheel. I'm sure that operating on low pressure is a
contributing cause, but it's also a desirable for the terrain we seem to
like.
Any thoughts or experience on this out there?
BTW, the tubes (original shipped from MAM) are stamped 8..00 - 6/7.
Thanks,
