[rebel-builders] Rebel Door Hinge Rivets

My 29/06/98 version of Ch. 23 specifies SS 1/8" x 1/8"... which
certainly isn't long enough. Like Ken, I didn't use SS rivets either.
Seems to me there was some discussion of this before. There must have
been because it's not the kind of change I'd just do on my own! =:0
At least, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

As far as I'm concerned there is no problem using those extra long
stainless rivets if there is room as they seem to pull the same.

My older manual does mention stainless rivets there but does not specify
a size. I elected not to use any stainless rivets on my doors as they
are more difficult to remove. I figured sooner or later someone would
bend the door requiring some rework and I'd end up cursing stainless
ones. I did use a few more aluminum ones on the hinge than specified and
I may have used a few structural Q aluminum rivets at the top and bottom
where I thought it might help.

Hello Rebel Builders:

Rebel Manual 23.0 Door Assembly (29/06/98) Pg.7, Number 17

The manual says to attach the door to the forward vertical stainless
hinge using 1/8 x 1/8 Stainless rivets (assumed RV5402).
Unfortunately, I do not have the RV5402's on my MAM packing list and
none in stock. The closest stainless rivet I have in my stock is
RV5404 (1/8 x 1/4) which look a bit long for the thickness of
material. Is this an acceptable rivet or should I order some RV5402's
for the application?

Thank you in advance for information.

Thank you Mike, Ken and Ron for your answers to my door hinge rivet question.

Seems the consensus is to use aluminum rivets and keep an eye on them. Yes, Ken,
those stainless rivets are a bugger to remove. Unfortunately, I did not plan, nor
did I drill any additional rivet holes at the hinge. However, the plan is to use
the standard RV1610 aluminum rivets, and if I can locate a couple of Q aluminum
rivets locally, I will use those top and bottom as Ken did.

Thanks again for the suggestions.

PS: Prior to my initial post to the group, I did accomplish a search on Rebel
archives for "Rebel Door Hinge Rivets", "Door Hinge", "Door Attach" and "Door Rivets"
with no success. Hmmm . . . maybe it is just me?

[rebel-builders] Rebel Door Hinge Rivets

I have a staggered double row of rivets up my door posts. The door
hinge material I have will have insufficient edge distance to pick up
the forward rivets. Is it ok to trim the hinge a bit and just pick up
the rear row or should I get some wider hinge?
Thanks,
Joel

Trim the hinge to clear, or sit flat behind the forward row. One row
of rivets in the hinge is fine.

As you probably know by now, aligning the doors can be tricky, and
takes awhile. You may have to trim that hinge edge more than once, so
take it slow.

The double row of rivets isn't there to support the door but to help spread out shearing forces from hard landings. I'd just rivet it as is. The close edge distance isn't going to hurt anything.
