[rebel-builders] Poll: IFR / IMC flight

Well, I don't have a Rebel (I have a Moose), but I do fly IFR on occasion.
More actual IFR to get through a cloud/heavy haze later to VFR on top. I
don't generally fly through solid IFR for any prolonged period if I can help
it.

Hi All,

Can I get a quick poll on how many of you with IFR panels in their
Rebel/Elite
ROUTINELY fly in IMC. Please include VFR-on-top operations.

At a minimum, 'ROUTINELY' for me would be using your IFR-equipped
Rebel/Elite to maintain your IFR currency and one or two recreational
flights
into actual IMC per year.

On the other end of the spectrum, I'd also like to hear how many of you fly
'in
the soup' for prolonged periods with your birds.

I don't want to start a debate about equipment lists, electric or steam
gauges, or redundancy, etc...

I'm just trying to get a sense from this group whether IFR flight in the
Rebel is
a rarity or a common occurrence.

Thanks in advance...I'm hoping this data will help with my panel pricing and

layout in my Rebel.

[rebel-builders] Poll: IFR / IMC flight

Perhaps I am GETTING a bit older but I do find some wisdom in the FAA
regulations...Part 135 for charter pilots which covers most planes from the
CUB on up to GW 12,500 and then some. A restriction in preflight planning
---no longer than 15 min in actual for each flight--- Makes good since to
me NOW! (& no I haven't seen a IFR CUB)

On a 3.5 hour flight mostly in IMC, Cessna 172 with a very good king radio
stack no A/P, I became exhausted and began making mistakes, thank you ATC
for saving my butt! Yes I was Legal, highly proficient at the time and had
just received my permanent ATP certificate 2 weeks earlier. So I still fly
IFR often but not for long legs in the crud. This includes over than 360
different T-210, P-210's and a bunch of other stuff.

i dont fly my rebel imc even tho it is equipped. i just have no need to as i have a twin comanche for that stuff,

havin said that i see no reason to not equip a rebel for imc since the experimental equip is so reasonable. then if you find yourself imc or stranded due to wx, you are set to go.

What kind of money are we looking at for legal IFR navigation avionics
nowadays? A couple of years ago it looked like $10k would disappear
quickly despite already having full flight instruments and transponder.

if you can do all the work yourself and get a used IFR GPS like a Garmin GNC300 GPS Comm, I think under 5K assuming you already have a Dynon or Grand Rapids PFD

for IFR flight you need the appropriate equipment for the particular flight. if you navaigate VOR,s and shoot VOR approaches, you dont need an IFR GPS.

getting an IFR GPS installation certified is always another expense.

[rebel-builders] Poll: IFR / IMC flight

I can't say that I do a lot of IFR flying in SR N96CS, but do try to maintain some semblance of proficiency for basic IFR flying (climbing to on top, or descending to VFR). With 42 years of airline flying with a two man crew, I don't feel comfortable with single pilot, low minimum flying. While I have dual GPS, dual coms, VOR/ILS, A/P, I still limit my IFR exposure to what I feel is my current proficiency, and equipment level - which certainly isn't what it used to be. Bottom line is be honest with you equipment and your true abilities - you're flying a single engine airplane, with limited instrumentation (in today's modern world), and if you don't maintain your proficiency, you're asking for trouble.

My rebel is IFR certified. I am current as an IFR pilot but I do not fly the Rebel in the soup. It just is not a good instrument platform.
That being said I do on an occasion fly an approach with it for that just in case stuff but that is it.
