My question is what cruise and top-end speed I should expect from my O-290.
I have just received a new wooden Margie Warnke prop. It climbs at 1000 -
1100 fpm; cruises at 2400 rpm at 109 mph; and tops out at 2600 rpm and 118
mph.
She is willing to further refine it before putting on the final finish, but I
don't want to screww up a good thing.
Any words of wisdom?

Those sound like fairly decent numbers to me Bill. I've got a warp drive in
front of my 0-290D and I climb a little faster but 2600 gives me a little
less speed. I haven't done any speed mods to my plane yet. Is yours a D or
a D2 and how fresh is it?

Mine is an O-290-G. It has 200+ hours. I have no fairings. I am in the
process of removing my Speed cowl and building one according to Murphy's
plans and Bob P's recommendations. Access to the engine was so poor with the
speed cowl.

Hi Bill !

The flight performance numbers you're getting don't sound bad,
for no fairings. If you have the bungee gear, you can pick up 10 mph,
just by doing a good job with fairings ! You might want to try using
1/16" Lexan for them - it's a LOT easier to work & re-work than
aluminum, and won't cut into the aluminum struts as easily.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one that was frustrated by
that cowling ! ;-) You might want to have a look at that fiberglass
nosebowl for the Thorp T-18 that Aircraft Spruce sell for about $80 -
Rick Harper used one, and it makes a pretty sexy looking Rebel !!

Hi Guys

I agree the speed cowling as built per plans would be a real pain. I think
the piano hinge style
is just too much of a pain re: accessability.

It takes a fair bit of extra work to make this cowling easy to work with but
I do feel it is well worth it & am very satisfied with the performance
results.
