[rebel-builders] Fuel guages

Mike

thanks for the info.

Not sure why you think a curved sight gauge is less accurate. It
actually gives more distance between my 10 liter markings. You do want
the lower one near the back of the tank when the fuel is low but you can
of course put the ports anywhere you wish.

Hi Charlie and all, Until 818R flies I'm flying my ultralight Drifter which
has a sight guage like the Rebel, it is about 2 yards behind the pilot, so
visibility isn't easy. We have stuff called "contact" here, which is
coloured sheets of plastic with contact adhesive applied that school kids
use to cover their books. We have found that a narrow strip (less than 1/4
of tube circumference, and red works well) applied to the guage tubing
opposite the viewer (so the viewer looks through the tube and fuel at the
strip of contact behind) has a lense effect making the fuel level MUCH more
visible. Not sure whether it's necessary for the Rebel but might be worth a
try.
I like the simplicity and reliability of sight guages and will use
them on 818 but wonder if anyone has found a way to have the tube lie flat
against the inside of the fus root rib, rather than take the almost semi
circular route between the upper and lower fittings? Which isn't good for
accuracy.
Cheers Mike

[rebel-builders] Fuel guages

Post by Jesse Jenks » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:50 pm

I used sight gauges from Texas Sport Cub. They are glass, and are working great so far. I have them plumbed with 1/4" alum tubing from the tanks. The only negative I can see is that they are rather short. I wanted to position them diagonally, but they ended up vertical. I still need to calibrate and mark them as I only have a couple marks so far from the first time I put fuel in the tanks in the tail down attitude. Any advice for the calibration/marking procedure? I have 32 gal. per wing, so it seems like a big pain to raise and lower the tail numerous time to get tail low and tail high marks. I was thinking of doing one tank in each attitude and then duplicating the marks side to side.
