Rick

Anyone trying to share free info sure doesn't need to apologize for a
minor discrepancy.
My excuse is a great line from the "Simpsons" about having a brain that
is full. It goes something like - every time I learn something new, it
bumps something older out of my brain - like the time I took that home
winemaking course and forgot how to drive....

Sounds like your two 5" springs are very similar to having one of the
10" springs. I am still surprised that they are not stronger.

I checked my construction pictures, and I owe you an apology.
I used 2 - 5" springs. (The first sign of age is loss of . . . . .
.something)
I'm sending this picture directly to you due to the e-mail size limitation.
If anyone else would like this picture, e-mail me and I'll send it out to you.

Here's the data on the 5" springs.
Danly Heavy Duty Springs
Cat. #: 9-3220-26S
RATE - lbs. required to deflect 1/10th inch 108.0 lbs.
Total deflection recommended for long life 1081 lbs @ 1.00"
Total deflection recommended for average life 1351 lbs. @ 1.25"
Maximum operating deflection 1622 lbs. @ 1.50"
Total travel to solid 1935 lbs. @ 1.79"

Weird numbers. I know your gear works fine and does not sag very much
so something must be amiss with the spring specs or maybe my math.

If I remember correctly, the ballpark numbers were something like spring
force is 1.7 times the weight on the wheel, even at 1 g weren't they?
(The multiplier would increase somewhat as the gear deflects and changes
the geometry) Say 800 lb per wheel at one g giving maybe 1400 lbs on the
spring at 1g. ?? I would have expected a spring that gives maybe 4000 lb
or so force at full compression...

Well yes the total travel adds, but the force stays the same ie 1875 lb
will compress both springs fully when they are put end to end, or when
they are separate. You would have to parallel them or put them side by
side to double the force. Still a bit of a mystery there...
