Before you move your firewall back I suggest doing some research in the archives. There's lots of rebels flying with bigger engines and the firewall in the origional position.

We are at the point where we are putting FUS 7 and the firewall in to the Rebel. We are putting in a Lycoming 0290 and the plans say cut the flange back on FUS 7 3 inches but the picture shows cutting FUS 7 all the way across. If we do this won't the fuselage stick out on both sides? The cross pipes FUS 5 will be too long then? What exactly are we supposed to do here?

I fly Rebels in both firewall (fore and aft) configurations and unequivocally prefer the unmolested variety!

I've also heard that you can cut the firewall back only 1 inch instead of the full three. This will improve the W&B while still allowing room behind the panel and not requiring a firewall extension under the windshield.

If you're going to go through the extra work of cutting it back, might as
well go all the way to 3 inches. The only drawback that I know of is the
pilot sits back 3 more inches under the wing and loses a bit more
visibility. The benefits are better weight and balance to better handle the
bigger engines. Have to remember, too, that when the firewall is moved back
3 inches all your other cabin arms go back 3 inches as well, including
pilot/pax and baggage. So the improvement is not just the engine arm.

The panel is also cut back 3 inches with less of an angle on the sides, so
ends up with the same room behind as without the firewall cut back.

I have my firewall cut back 3 inches, and able to keep my battery forward of
the firewall with a Lyc 360 engine with a heavy metal prop.

Also be sure to upgrade your corner wraps in the front fuselage, bottom to
.032 and top to .025.

Hi,

I am in the middle of this job. I must say it has been an experience. Lots
of work the manual doesnt tell you I found. I only have 1 more fuse 70 to
install. If you would like i can send you pics of what I've got so far. Bob
Patterson said " oh no " when I told him I started in on it. He was right
but too late it is done. It will turn out ok but lots of frigging around to
do it. If I had it to do over again I probably wouldn't have done it but
like i said, so far so good, 1 pc. to go. Just lots of extra time.
