I've run an Odyssey PC925 for two years approx. 37 Hr. More start ups than I
care to remember in dialing in a Subaru 2.2. The odyssey I put in was for
automotive use and claims to be able to crank over 500 ci. engines. It's
always been there when I needed it. Won't say it's the cats meow for a few
more years but if it's still putting out then, I'll highly recommend it. They
do have a few differences, like you shouldn't trickle charge them, throw a
minimum of 10 amps to charge one. My standard regulator on the auto
conversion has always kept it happy though.

Odyssey batteries

All of the Odyssey batteries are not steel cased. there is a PC680 size
/rating both with and without the metal case. The metal case unit does
not need a full box, just hold down. The cheapest I have (in USA) found
the metal case PC680 is US$99 from Battery Web. Don't forget to use a
regulator set at 14.4 volts to properly charge these. The PC680 is more
than enough for an O-360.

Ebay, under the motorcycles - parts and accessories - BMW listing has
Odyssey PC680 batteries as low as US$50.00. There was one listing for
the metal case at about US$10.00 more. This is a Harley / BMW battery
as well as commonly used by home builders. It will spin an O-360
handily. The best price I had seen - and paid :(:( - so far was US$100.
Too bad for me but may help some of you.

The bolt-on terminals are usually what aircraft use as well.

Odyssey batteries

Post by Ralph Baker » Sat Feb 18, 2012 8:56 am

These are, technically speaking, absorbed mat, gas recombinant
chemistry. The electrolyte is as much as the mats against the plates
will hold. The only venting is to prevent an explosion of the case. As
such they can be mounted in any position except upside down without
leaking. Normal operation does not vent as the chemistry recombines the
products internally.

The reason that I suggest a metal case or using a metal case Odyssey is
that it is hard to hold one down without "squeezing" the case at a point
or points. I.E. concentrating pressure on the case. Plastic usually
doesn't like that over time and I would not trust the case integrity
under those conditions. The metal case eliminates that concern as would
a battery box. These are (incorrectly in my opinion) advertised as "dry
cell batteries". I would not trust them to not leak some if the case is
fractured and having cleaned up after too many puked motorcycle
batteries believe it is best avoided.

The metal case can easily be mounted against the firewall by means of a
shelf underneath and a bolt fastened crossbar across the front.

I thought I posted a pic of the Odyssey battery installation I did in
Charles Dixon's Rebel. Will take a look and if it's not there will post some
pics later to systems in all aircraft models.

I suggest a PC680 for the Lyc O-360. There is a metal case version which simpplifies mounting by eliminating the need for a battery box at your option.
