Firewall and Fus 11 connection to Cage

I have a problem with the manual at step 324 onwards and fig113 and
114. When I trial fit the firewall and Fus 11R and Fus11 L sub- assembly
to the cage with the 1 1/32 block at 24 1/2 inches in front of the cage
I find the rear edge which is meant to slip under Fus 26 too low down
according to the Fig114. Has anyone discovered if this is a typo in the
manual. If I position the fus 11 approximately as shown the block at the
from should be something like 3 inches. I would have thought it easier
to provide a dimension from the the table to the top of Fus 11 to
position the firewall / fus11 assembly . I have looked forward in the
manual but cannot find any other info. which may guide me. What am I
missing? Any ideas anyone??
Thanks

Mike,

I had just gone out to the hanger to get the measurements for you and see
that your question is also posted to the list, so I will answer here in case
someone else needs the numbers!

That block is 1 3/32" by my old manual (not 1 1/32). Also make sure that the
firewall just makes it onto the block, otherwise the floor pan will hold it
(the firewall) up in the air, off of the block. I measured 4 flying Rebels
on site! Measuring from the bottom of the cabin (your table in your case, as
I took the FUS-35 thickness out of the measurements) to the top edge of the
FUS-11 side panel was between 23 5/16" to 23 5/8" on the 4 Rebels. All four
aircraft have the firewall in the original position and when I say the top
of the FUS-11, this is the top edge of the flat cut out spot that overlaps
the carrythru door post. I can't see MAM moving the Thrust line by almost 2
inches, to the 3 inch block you say you need to make it work out. Are you
cutting the firewall back, and if so the distance to the spacer block would
be 3 inches less. Moving the firewall also changes lots of other things and
since I have never done one and don't even have instructions to do so, I
can't help other than that if you have cut yours back.

Rick D., I forgot to measure the wing incidence while out in the hanger. I'm
not going back out as it is -23*C with winds gusting to 80 KNOTS. I will try
to get numbers for you tomorrow or it won't happen until February.

Firewall and Fus 11 connection to Cage

Thanks Wayne,
After your measurements I think all is clear now. It appears the block
height 1 3/32 (I put 1 1/32 -- was a typo) will be correct as I was
mislead by the proportions in the fig 114. Where it says slip fus 11
under the fus 26 actually gives a greater vertical overlap than shown
and also the bottom flange of fus 11 will need cutting back further to
avoid interference with the gusset plate. Apologies for sending you the
message twice, the Rebel list was down for a while and my first e-mail
was bounced as undeliverable. I will layout strictly according to the
manual and modify the edge flange on the bottom of Fus 11. I am not
intending to cut back the firewall. Thanks again . Will we see you on
Sunday at Brampton - I would like to obtain from you a firewall
reinforcing kit if you are still supplying them?

Mike, The manual has you put the FUS-11 under the FUS-26 to drill the holes
as I believe the 26 is predrilled. When you get around to the rivet stage,
make sure you put the FUS-11 on top for a cleaner look. It also looks very
nice (and adds a little strength) if you cut the lower corner wraps so they
blend up from their rivet line to the top of the FUS-26 panel in an "open
stretched S".

I will not be at the meeting Sunday as I will be gone as of Friday A.M. to
the Caribbean!

As for the 3 firewall reinforcing plates, it is a great idea to get them on
the firewall BEFORE you are at the stage you are working at now, as they
hold the firewall nice and flat. You should have at least the witches hats
cleco'd in place at the stage you are at or you are asking for trouble (I
know, the manual tells you to do it after you have the firewall in place
unless it has been changed, but it is not the only place that the manual is
backwards!). If the firewall doesn't come out flat (especially if the lower
edge and corners fold in any amount), you are changing the thrust line of
the engine as the mount will tip down (or sideways, etc).

If you want my 3 plate set (I have a couple sets ready), please fax me your
VISA card # to 705-527-0874. Also expiry date and name on card, along with a
mailing address and I will try to get them to the post office before
Thursday. Anything that goes on plastic I have to write a bill, so it would
be, $125Cdn + $10pst(if in Ontario) + $8.75gst(if in Canada) = $143.75 +
$7.50 handling, to package them up and the trip to town to post + actual
postage costs. Or you can wait until I come back and make a trip up in
February and pick a set up (and pay cash $125). You can use which ever
rivets you are using on the firewall to install them with.
