[rebel-builders] Dynon remote compass location

Hi Jesse

I ended up installing mine behind the cabin about 3 feet into the tailcone
after discovering the magnets in my headset were making the compass turn as
I moved my head... brain bending when I first saw it !!!

What is the best (easiest that works well) location for the Dynon remote
compass? Eric, are you here? I was thinking on the ceiling behind one of the
bulkheads in the baggage area, or possibly right above the pilot's head next
to the torque tube support. Not sure just how isolated or far away from
ferrous stuff this thing really needs to be.
Thanks.
Jesse

Behind the baggage wall, up near the ceiling is where I put my magnetometers
too. (Search http://n254mr.com for "magnetometer" for several pics) As I
recall the mfgr. manual wanted 30" from any ferrous material. I think that's
a little overkill, but where I put them was about as far away from anything
ferrous as I could get them, and relatively easy to align with the
centerline, etc. Research at the time raised concerns about being near a
swarm of steel rivet mandrels in the area, but that has proved to be not a
problem.

Incidentally, the photos at http://n254mr.com/node/922 remind me the
magnetometers are Crossbow brand. Although these were supplied by AFS for
their EFIS's, I wouldn't be surprised if Dynon uses the same ones.

Of course, you want to use only brass or stainless hardware in the mounts.

Hey Ron,

Where is the AHARS in the Dynon system? Is it an external box in the tailcone, or is it integral to the display in the panel? I was debating building a shelf in the back big enough to mount both a magnetometer and an AHARS.

Jason (and others),

I'm putting a Dynon Skyview system in my Moose at the end of

it with me. I'll take pictures of everything and ask any questions that you
can think of during the install. I'll post pictures to the list (well some
anyway).

I installed the new Dynon Skyview in my rebel. I made a tray that attaches
to one of the tailcone top bulkheads and is adjustable in the front to match
the plane's attitude. The ADHARS unit bolts in there and the static and
pitot and AOA tubing connects there.
I guess I could have put it in the area at the back where the elevator horn
is but I thought it'd get exposed to water there especially with floats.
Dynon has good manuals AND customer service. Craig

Be careful using stainless in any mount or hardware in any magnetically
sensitive area. There are magnetic stainless steels.

Thanks for the replies guys. I guess I'll put it in the baggage area overhead. It would be nice to put it all the way back behind the aft end of the baggage area behind the fabric bulkhead that will eventually be there, but I have my battery/contactor and elt there and would worry that would cause magnetic interference. Having it in the baggage area means I will have to be careful what I load in there....

Interesting. The add'l. requirement to get pitot/static to the same
non-magnetic place presents a different can of worms (kettle of fish?)
FWIW, with AFS gear only the magnetometers are remote. The AHRS (pitot
static, etc.) and AOA air ports are integral to the panel units. Both
brands are good systems... no argument there.

Hmm. Come to think of it, squeezing (jamming?) the pitot/static plumbing
behind my overbuilt panel wasn't easy either. ;-)

I mounted my Dynon remote compass and ELT on the floor. Do it again, I'd
make a bracket up on the ceiling. That would leave the floor available for
skis, fishing rods, and other light and long back country gear. I located
mine to the side, has not been a problem with the camping I've done, but
easy to rivet up a support in the ceiling. Using a compass to detect
magnetic objects is good. Didn't notice anything from my ELT or support.

When we had our EFIS running on the test bench and I happened to notice
the displayed heading changing randomly by one degree, or so it seemed.
Then I remembered that I had one of those little six inch steel rulers
in my shirt pocket and the shift happened every time I sat down at the
bench. A further experiment with a small screw driver, the size for the
