I am at the point that I need to decide where to put the antennas on my
Rebel. The easiest and most aesthetically pleasing would be to hang it
under the belly. Has anyone had experience with varied locations?

Hi Scott !

On top of the fuselage, just behind the cabin, works well
for most. It gives a good ground plane for signal distribution -
mine were in a line-astern arrangement (possibly for slightly less
drag ??) . Some folks put them on the fairing strips at the wing root,
for easy access. These antennae can shake around a fair bit, so
you might want to add extra doublers under the skin, to stop any
oilcanning (especially if you put them on the cabin roof).

I would not put Comm antennae on the belly - they are just TOO
vulnerable to damage from brush, stones, etc. (not to mention gear
collapses ...). I have heard that they don't work as well upside-down,
either, but have no idea how true that is !!
(Any radio engineers out there ???)

SCOTT
I mounted my com on top just aft the cabin good ground plane as Bob pointed
out.
ELT just forward the tail and mode C on the belly just aft of the cabin. All
seem to work very well in these locations.

So I added one on the ELT also

Scott, I like to put the Comm antenna on one of the top wing to cabin
fairings (around the main spar area) and the GPS puck on the other one in
the same area. This puts the GPS puck at the highest point of the wing in
flight with no obstructions to allow perfect satellite reception. The E.L.T.
antenna just far enough forward on the tail cone to ensure that when it
bends back it clears the fin and has enough "clearance" for clear signal
transmission (I believe the mfg's spells out 18" minimum or more between
vertical structures or other antennas). This makes for a clean installation,
especially if you use the old stainless 45* whips as they tend to visually
disapear as opposed to the white fiberglass ones. Contrary to the
installation guides with all the new radios, the old whip works just as good
(or better) than the fiberglass ones. I can transmit and receive to places
that most certifed stuff out their can't, and frequently relay radio calls
for people.

If you plan on doing much bush flying and you mount it on the belly, the
antenna will eventually get broken off by something close to the ground.

You might consider Bob Archer's antennas sold by Aircraft Spruce. They are
mounted in the fiberglass wing tips. Nothing sticking out. Bob says quite
a few RV builders have had good luck with this installation. I have already
run my cables to try it in the wing tips on my Super Rebel. Bob says that
having strobes in the tips shouldn't be a problem either. I ran my
strobe/nav light cables separate from my coax for the antennas (about 6
inches apart) just for extra interference protection. I'll put the comm
antenna in one wing tip and the nav antenna in the other. I have Bob's home
phone number somewhere which I got by calling Torrence, CA information. He
wasn't at all upset as he sells his antennas directly himself. He doesn't
care whether you buy from him or Aircraft Spruce though. He gets his money
one way or the other. If anyone wants the number, I'll see if I can find
it.

Sounds like a clean alternative. I'd be a bit concerned about
signal loss on that long a run of antenna lead, though - the Super
wings are a LOT longer than RV's !! ;-)

With the right cable, the signal loss issue can be taken care off. There is
a great deal of difference amongst cable manufacturers. If you want to know
details, don't ask me. My buddy David Ridding did all that & ordered cable
& connectors from the US.

If I recall correctly, I used a flat foil tape from RST for my communication antenna
vertically in my Long-EZ winglet. The coax cable length was approx. 20 - 25 feet (from
wing tip to instrument panel) and bundled with Whelen strobe cables for part of the way.
It has worked great for me for 12 years now. All of this was accomplished before Archer
technology.

I am going with Archer comm antenna in my right Rebel tip along with Whelen strobes
wiring unless someone tries it before me and says otherwise OR someone designs a better
mousetrap before I get to that stage.

Yes, use the best BNC connectors and coax (braid type) you can.
