[rebel-builders] horizontal stab install

I don't use a 2 x 4.. a 6 foot x 2 or 3inch wide strip of .025 or .032. that
way it will go under the fin! You end up with it a couple inches back from
the rear spar edge.. but tape it down parallel to the edge on one side and
then play and adjust to get the other side the same before setting those
front attach brackets.

Good morning everyone,

I've been searching through the archives in vain for a particular post
(probably
Wayne's) on the use of a 2x4 clamped to the rear spar of the horizontal
stabs as
you position the front attach brackets for drilling through the bulkhead
and
doubler. When I try to implement this method, I see no alternative but to
to
notch the 2x4 to accommodate the vertical fin. Not difficult to do,
obviously,
but I just want to check with the group if there was a 'best-practice' for
this
step.

Thanks,

Rob

Thanks Wayne,

So.....you don't use anything to keep the two stabs rigidly 'connected' or
horizontal throughout the procedure?

For that.. I make a stack of what ever junk I have lying around and shim it
to get both of the stabs perfectly level with the smart level. In this case
a ladder and milk crates, supplimented with some SM and some thin shims.

If you do it in a similar situation that I show there Rob.. be sure to slap
the level across the fus door sills for reference... so that the stabs are
parallel to it! It may not be sitting level on wheels.

[rebel-builders] horizontal stab install

Also keep in mind, if you haven't seen the posts, I have found over the
years that a stab incidence of 0.7 to 0.8 degrees is what is needed vs the
1.0 spelled out in the manual. At 1.0 you'll be flying with a hint of up
elevator all the time. You can see same in all my float flying videos.
Elevator tip is always down slightly compared to the stab leading edge on
mine, that is mounted at 1.0 All the ones I've built since have 0.7 or 0.8
and they seem to fly with the tip pretty much flush in cruise.
