Wing Torque Tubes

Hi,
I am ready to cut my 12 foot long 2" X .035 Torque Tube into
two pieces. The new MAM manual says on page 10.6, page 1 step 4
to cut it into two equal lengths. All the pictures I have of the
cabins of Rebels show one torque tube starting at the left wing
root and going outboard, and the tube for the right wing starting
at the left side of the cabin, crossing the cabin and continuing
out the right wing. Shouldn't one tube be longer-about the width
of the cabin? In the controls section, 20.0 page 22, step 5, says
to cut the two torque tubes to a different dimension. One 5' 3/8"
and one 40 1/4" inch long. It identifies the torque tube as CC-64.
The wing chapter, chapter 10 does not show the torque tubes in the
exploded diagram, Fig. 1, and does not identify give the torque
tube a part number. Are there 4 torque tubes? A picture of them
in the wing would have helped. Maybe I am making this too dificult,
But I hate cutting parts too short.
Thanks,
Bob Brennan

Wing Torque Tubes

Hi Bob

The long and short to your question is that you cut the 12' tube in half and 6' is used
in each wing. I believe what you see in the cabin is the other short piece supplied
which is 47 1/2" long. Both of the wing torque tubes are tied (bolted) to this shorter
piece when the wings go on.

Here is a hint for when you are fitting the torque tube bearing brackets (CC-38), check
the perpendicularity of the flanges of the mounting brackets relative to the bearing
mounting surface to make sure that the bearings will be perpendicular to the rear spar
when the bearing brackets are in place (test clamp in place) and if they are not tweak
the mounting flanges of the brackets until they are. I spent a fair bit of time doing
this on our first wing (on the table now) and wound up with a torque tube that turns
effortlessly in the bearings and I did not have to sand the bearings to achieve this. I
did however re-shape the mounting flanges to make the bearings perpendicular to the spar
and to make all 3 mounting flanges touch the spar along their length. This is one piece
that MAM could be more precise on when they are making it IMHO.

Well, hope this sorts out your concerns,

Dave R.

Wing Torque Tubes

Bob

The 12 foot piece of tubing is used to make the 6' tubes that fit entirely inside each
wing and extend an inch or two thru the root ribs. You should have material to make the
additional two (unequal) shorter lengths to carry thru the cabin. The tubes in the wings
are connected to those in the cabin at each wing root with a pair of control horns and
some spacers as required. I don't know when I'll be out to my plane, hopefully later this
week, but I'd be glad to show you if you catch me out there.

Happy New Year
