Corrected measurement: Upgraded/Custom elevator/horizontal stabilizer hinge

Post by Ted Waltman » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:06 pm

I made a mistake (thanks to a builder who pointed this out to me) in the
below measurements. Std hinge/bracket from factory are 0.125" 6061 T6
whereas new, custom ones are 0.250" 2024 T3.

Again, the elevator-bulkhead/spar to horizontal stabilizer bulkhead/spar
distance is the same as on your current kit/plane.

Subject: Upgraded/Custom elevator/horizontal stabilizer hinges

I plan to have a local machine shop make up some custom elevator/h-stab
hinge/bracket assemblies (see three pictures at file area 124
S/M-Modifications). This email is to help me gauge how much serious
interest there is in folks ordering these custom items. If you can't or
don't want to log onto the builder site to view the pictures please send me
a private email (ted@vafm.org) and I will email you the pictures.

Why make these custom parts? Because numerous folks with flying Moose
(including myself) report hinge hole elongation, particularly on the L (or
pilot) outermost hinge/bracket, after x flight hours. This wear is
particularly noticeable on those Moose with the radial engine and the V-530
propeller (the big 2-blade paddle propeller).

The standard Super Rebel/Moose hinge/brackets are 0.063" 6061 T6 (as far as
I know) with no roller bearing. These custom brackets will be made out of
0.125" 2024 T3 with a stainless steel roller bearing. The roller bearing is
supplied by McMaster-Carr with a dynamic radial load capacity of 335 lbs.

The attach bolt pattern and overall size (vis-a-via mount holes) remain the
same. The mount hole between the hinge/bracket is the same height as
previous--hence absolutely nothing (other than having a stouter part) will
change on your elevator nor on your horizontal stabilizer. No distances
change. No doublers change. You will have to go up one size on your AN3-xA
mount bolts due to the thicker material of course.

For those of you who have already assembled your h-stab/elevator you know
what a massive PITA and time consuming job it is to fit the elev/h-stab in
place and then to get the hinge/bracket bolts in place. You only want to
fit them in place once if you can help it! So fix the inevitable
down-the-road problem now (with the upgraded, custom hinge/bracket) while
you're building or, like me, go through the angst of fixing the problem
later. Depending on cost, I may upgrade all five of my hinge/bracket
assemblies on the h-stab/elevator or I may only upgrade the outermost R and
L sets.

What is the cost? I don't know yet. Maybe $50/set maybe $100/set; maybe
more (but I hope we can make enough to get the cost to a "reasonable"
point). Again, I'm sure the price will go down with more quantity. Please
email me directly, again ted@vafm.org, and let me know how many sets you
might want to purchase.

I'll wait a week or two to see how much interest I get. I'll email those
who express interest back after a week or two (at the most) to give you
feedback on how much interest I receive (total quantity of interest in other
words). Then I'll go to a local CNC shop and get some ballpark #'s. The
builder that I got the sample hinge/bracket from

Thank you for your interest!

P.S. Many thanks to the anonymous builder who lent me his sample hinges for
the pictures and measurements.
