Lyc question

I'm getting a little more serious about my engine search. I've been working on
an assumption that the narrow decks are a little lighter. My best source on
this was verification by one of the owners at Lycon (Visalia, CA). He guessed
up to 14 lbs lighter. Tony Bingelis' FW Forward book includes a table
reprinted from Avco Lycoming showing the empty dry weight of 244 lbs for
the 0-320 A and E series, and 253-255 lbs for the other carb'd 320s (B, D,H).

This muddies the waters a bit, since E is wide deck (and the Lyc table shows
it with the A series at 244). And B is narrow deck, yet the Lyc table puts it
at 255 lbs.

Obviously it can be tough to find the real deal as engines rarely get weighed
with the same accessories on or off, let alone separate from the airframe.
Anyone know why an E series could be in the same lower weight as the early
A series? Or any other tips on the subject?

Thanks!
