I have the JDM wheels (newest available from MAM I believe). How
tight should I get the axle nuts? With the tires off the ground I can
tighten them enough by hand to slow down wheel rotation. I wouldn't
think I need to go any more than that, but not sure. Thanks Jesse

Firmly tightened by fingers should be fine. You want no free play as
free play kills tapered roller bearings. Yes they may have noticeable
drag when turning by hand but that is expected. A little overtight is
better than under tight, same as for car axle bearings.

Be sure to lift each wheel and re-check the axle nut after a couple of
landings. My previously finger tight, no-spin bearings had loosened -- too
much grease perhaps -- even enough to be noticeable when loaded on the
ground. I put a wrench on the nut(s) to tighten to the next cotter pin
position to just where the wheel wouldn't spin freely again.

Incidentally, with spring gear, I use two short 2x4's clamped across the
lower part of the leg with two C-clamps, and a std. bottle jack under the
inside low edge of the inside 2x4. (See http://n254mr.com/node/1513) I
wouldn't want to leave it that way for long, but it works well for quick
wheel servicing.
