Hi all,
I'm planning to build a 2 or 4 door cowl using the MC-3b nose bowl (Piper style with starter blister) from ACS. Can I get away without using a prop spacer?
Thanks.
Jesse

Thanks Angus,
That's funny that you answered...I was just looking at a picture of your plane that I have saved on my desktop. It's bobbing on a lake somewhere with a bikini clad woman on the float...I think that's yours anyway. If not, hopefully your wife doesn't read your email.
Thanks again.

We're safe Jesse, that's her (my wife) standing on the float.
Found a couple of good pics of our plane, and nose-bowl, on www.airliners.net search Murphy Rebel CFTUJ
Our nose-bowl is from a PA18, so's Ken's.
Best regards, Angus

[rebel-builders] prop spacer with nosebowl cowl?

Posted: Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:06 pm

Hi Jesse,
Yes, bottom cowl is one piece, .025, I'd use .032 next time. Top centre section bolts to the boot-cowl and nose-bowl, is about 10" wide with angle stiffeners and doublers. It hinges the two opening side doors. 4 full length piano hinges for the doors top and bottom and the lower full length stainless hinge pins pull out from the front to allow opening and access. Should/would have made those panels out of .032 as well.
PA18 nose bowl is modified for the landing light.
In the picture of my plane departing St.Thomas you can see the 4130 diagonal float-braces that I ran from the top rear engine mount stiffener I added, through the fire-wall and dash to the forward wing pick-ups. They make quite a difference on a torsional dimension.
If you need or want pics let me know...........Angus

Cool, that's the first one I've seen with a one piece bottom like that. .032 seems like it would be pretty hard to work with, and I don't have a roller either. Guess I might need to use one for the side panels...even with .025?

Jesse: I have shaped .032" 2024 aluminum, which is stiffer then

the aid of a rubber mallet.

Jesse build it with 4 easily opened doors and you will maintain that engine
like a top. Make the access any more difficult and the pre-flight,
"curiosity inspections", etc come to a halt. Amazing what gets neglected
behind the two piece speed cowling and it's numerous screws/camlocks or what
ever means you hold it on with, it's just not convenient (especially at a
dock!)

That's a really valid suggestion Wayne!
I guess I'm just so used to zipping out the 30/or/so plastic washered stainless no.8's that I don't even think about it anymore.
And it is a major pain at the dock (due to lack of ferrous content) usually involves a mask and snorkel..Angus

[rebel-builders] prop spacer with nosebowl cowl?

by Bob Patterson
Hi Jesse !

i open my bottom doors every oil change ! i have a quick drain
valve on the oil tank, and a tube running from it to the rear,
fastened to the bottom of the fuselage aft of the firewall.
The tube means I don't have to carry or fool with a hose
for oil changes.

The 4 door cowl is THE best way to go ! Birds can build
nests while you have lunch - just pull the wire out, and
have a peek, and check the oil while you're there !!

I think I am going to go with the 4 door. Do you actually open the lower
doors very often though?

Jesse build it with 4 easily opened doors and you will maintain that
engine like a top. Make the access any more difficult and the
pre-flight, "curiosity inspections", etc come to a halt. Amazing what
gets neglected behind the two piece speed cowling and it's numerous
screws/camlocks or what ever means you hold it on with, it's just not
convenient (especially at a dock!)

JMHO..
