Hi Charlie !

A good epoxy should work ...

The piano hinges are the best fastener for the sides of the
cowl. You will need bunches of cam-locks for the back end ...
Be SURE you add screws to secure the ends of the piano hinge
wires - ideally insert wires from the rear.... If from the front, &
not well secured, they CAN creep forward and saw off a metal prop !!
(Don't ask .... :-( )

Be sure that the cowl bottom is at least 4 - 6" below the
bottom of the firewall, and extends at least 2 - 4" behind the
firewall, also, add the rounded bottom to the firewall by adding
a strip of aluminum full width, wrapping under the bottom of
the fuselage, to smooth the lip. All that is needed, for cooling !

Or - do what I did - toss the thing & make a nice 4 door metal
cowl with fiberglass nosebowl -- MUCH easier to for pre-flight
inspections, and it cools great !!! ;-) (Pics in Files )

Hello All

I have finally reached the point where I need too split the one piece
engine cowl. I am some what familiar with the West System Epoxy but can
anyone tell me what is the preferred resin/epoxy system used on the Rebel
cowl/windshield and the fiberglass supplied with the kit?

I am also wondering since I was shipped the piano hinges, which method
works the best for attaching the top and bottom cowls, the cam locks or
the piano hinge. My instructions sheets only talks about the cam locks.

Thank you in advance.

I think most guys just use common polyester resin from the local
hardware/auto supply store/marina Charlie. Worked fine for me including
for making a nosebowl for my 4 door aluminum cowl and various other
parts. I think there was a fairly detailed post about splitting the cowl
a few years ago. I did not use MAM's cowl. Test samples of the exact
resin and hardener you have if you are new to it like I was. Especially
if you are not certain of the age of the stuff as it can make a mess if
it does not fully harden.

Bob, Ken and Craig

Thanks for your replies on the engine cowls, now I will have to decide which
one to build. Both the fiberglass and the four door Alum cowl look like a
lot of work. My fiberglass cowl including the aft flange as shipped weighs
15 Lbs, do either of you know what the 4 door Alum cowl might weigh?
