ST 31 Channel across firewall

I am installing the doublers on the firewall as per Wayne's bullet proof
firewall. I noticed in looking at Roger Hoffman's pics that he did not
install the ST31 channel across the front of the firewall. Does the
installation of the doublers remove the need for the channel?
