[rebel-builders] fus 11 side panels - when to rivet

Post by craig » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:05 pm

Hi Roland,

In a nutshell...plan for the door hinge before you rivet, rivet the FUS-11's
when you're ready to rivet all of the front in place. Some have left it
cleco'd well into the build allowing them to remove it and work on the rear
of their panel, others, like me, couldn't wait and now lie on our backs to
work there <grin>. Probably makes the most sense to leave it cleco'd as
long as you can; you really don't need it riveted until you hang your eng.

Subject: [rebel-builders] fus 11 side panels - when to rivet

Just finished making and preparing all parts for the forward section -
firewall, etc. I have looked through the plans and cannot find mention of
when to rivet fus 11 (side panels) to the cage uprights. The instructions
only mention drilling a top and bottom hole, which was done some time ago.
I
would assume that the door hinge attaches here as well, but cant find any
mention of fus 11 in the door installation section.

Looking for help from those ahead of me in the build.

[rebel-builders] fus 11 side panels - when to rivet

Or you can rivet it all together now with the door hinge but leave the
glareshield off to facilitate wiring the panel. That way you will still
have reasonable access after hanging the engine for routing cables etc.
As per archives, recommend using more rivets on the door post than the
manual specifies. I think I purchased a wider hinge than what MAM
supplied and staggered the rivets a bit.

[rebel-builders] fus 11 side panels - when to rivet

What you could do is drill the holes in the hinge but don't rivet the door side. That way you get the structural support for hanging the engine without having a door in the way all the time.
