I've flown my rebel with fixed wheel skis and was always off in less than
500' solo. I never flew any where near gross so I don't know how much
difference that would make. I assume you have open aproaches and reasonably
level ground, landing over trees or downhill could make things a lot tougher.

was getting it in at 400 feet on wheels.but not sure on skis.

Thanks for the reply, i am not worried about getting off, but it is the getting
in and getting stopped that I am worried about. I am not a ski pilot yet, and
am not sure about landing and stopping.

I've never had any trouble getting stopped in a few hundred feet with my
wheel skis but they're kinda draggy in the snow. Fresh snow slows you down
a lot faster than packed snowe does.

Mike.. it depends on whether you want to play on hard packed strips and lake
ice or play in the deep stuff. I wouldn't put anything narrower, in a
straight ski, than 12" wide on a Rebel if you want to seriously play in the
snow.

The original Federal 1500 was only 6" wide and then went to 8".. 1800's 8 or
10" and 2000's 10 or 12". I put 12" wide bottoms on any 1500 beams I
rebuild. I have a pair of Aero 2000's here with the reinforced pedestal area
and 12" bottoms... already rigged for a Rebel if you are interested. Even
have some quick connect two wheel dollies to get from pavement to the snow.

Unfortunately we are snowed in here with over 2 feet of snow on the strip..
but I could do a change over at Midland in someone's hangar.

I thought I could get this info easily on the internet. How do you size
skis? It seems to me that there should be a direct relationship between
the gross weight of the aircraft and number of square feet or inches of
ski area. What you ski flyer putting on the Rebel?

Yes it is probably wise to go wide instead of long for skiis on a Rebel.
Less twisting leverage on the gear legs in turns.

No one has answered the original question. How much area of ski is required per pound of gross weight? Or to phrase it another way, if you do have 12 " wide skis for a Rebel, how long should they be?

I like Wayne's answer. It really does depend on the snow conditions you
expect to encounter. However there actually is a formula in ac43.13 scroll
down to chapter 5 for lots of info on selection and rigging for skis. When
I built my skis I just made them the same size as others that are
recommended for a plane about the same gross weight as a rebel. Mine are
12"x about 5'. Here's a link to ac43

I attached my front cables and bungees to the forward fus5 carrythrough
about 6" inboard from the door post. The rear cables go to the back gear
leg bolt. I considered using the rear float fitting for the back cable
but can't remember why I didn't use it. There's a chapter on ski rigging
in ac43.

Hello all,

I need some info for skis and the rebel. I have the skis and the rigging, but
need info on where guys are attaching the cables and bungies to the
fuselage. Any pics would be helpful. I need to see how and where you attach

Thanks and if you have picks of rebel on skis please forward to
