[rebel-builders] RE: Rebel weight increase

Post by Ken » Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:32 pm

Ray, Drew
Thanks for the info. I've always been registered at 2000 but I'd like to
bump the C. of A. to match that. Sounds like you did both Ray if you did
the climb test?? I don't think the registration weight will keep any
lawyers away.
Yes it takes a bit of water or some wind but I've managed to drop the
engine intake air temperature to near OAT and generally I'm seeing 500
fpm at the higher weights at 4800 rpm. More rpm and power is certainly
available if I re-pitch the prop. EGT's are about 805*C wide open and
about 820 in cruise at 4400 to 4500 rpm and 20 Liters/hr. That is only
about 76 kias but there's lots of scenery to enjoy on floats. I'm
keeping cruise egt below 830C simply because I have no experience or
info on the long term effect of running hotter. (Liquid cooling allows
hotter than air cooling) I've had to tinker with the cooling a bit to
keep coolant under 90C on these hot days. Higher cruise power would
require additional work to keep the cooling margin that I like. (One
fellow foolishly suggested that I consider climbing a bit to cooler air
but that just seems wrong when there are big and small lakes everywhere
in Ontario). Ground cooling is excellent. It will plane around lakes all
day when we decide to be a motorboat. We are having a good time with it
and I'm especially enjoying introducing folks to floatplane flying. I'm
getting a lot of comments along the lines of "clearly an airplane meant
for floats" and "looks even better on floats". :)

When I bought mine it just had a new subie installed E81 to EJ22 so I had it
registered for 2000lbs. Had to do the climb test which barely passed. It good
for insurance as if you crash over gross they may deny your claim. Two big
guys leave no room for gas at 1650lbs.

CFTQC

what kind of climb preformance are you getting now on the amphibs
