Hello Gary,

Can the tanks be separated from the wings?
I did some aircraft restoration projects where we separated tanks from the
wings
and fitted them on an concrete mixer with some straps and protection
material.
Filled the tanks with fine silver sand and water. (mind the C of G of the
mixer!!)
Let it run and kept a close watch on the inside. (every 5 - 10 minutes).
Cleaning and dry-ing afterwards is the most important part of course.

A friend of mine built an Avid Magnum and while building sloshed
his tanks with some tank sealant sloshing product purchased from
Wicks (labeled Fuel Tank Sealant - Automotive only). The catalogue
States that it is similar to Randolph 912 and NOT FOR AIRCRAFT USE.
Anyway the sloshed compound is starting to come off the fiberglass
Tanks and can be easily scraped off with a screwdriver. Not good.
The tanks have baffles.

The question is - "Does anyone know of any product available or
method that can be used to remove the sloshed material from the
inside of a fiberglass tank?"

This comes under the category of "Teachable Moments"

The tanks of my friends plane are integral to the wing and held
in by the forward spar and aft spar. In fact the tanks go partially
around both spars and the ribs stop any lateral movement. He has
decided to cut the top section of each tank off and insert an
aluminum tank (slightly smaller than the existing tank and will
loose about 1 1/2 gal per tank. He will then put nut plates around
the perimeter of the fiberglass, foam the tanks in place, put sheet
aluminum over the top and screw it into place via the nutplates. It
should work fine and add about 3 1/2 pounds per side. The positive
is that he will be able to use fuels with ethanol in them.
