On my way to Alaska (on my way)

Post by scott_lanier » Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:31 pm

Here is my trip report flying my rebel from Washington to Alaska

Well departed oak harbor today for the next chapter in my life. A quick 40
minute flight to abbotsford bc to clear customs and it turns out you can clear
canadian customs over the phone. Guess I should have brought that rifle.
From the off the the Frazier river canyon fo a 2.6 hour flight at 10500 feet to
Watson Lake. After an uneventful landing the I refueled and started asking
local pilots about my route. One helicopter pilot to me to stay out of the BC
trench and advised me of another route. I quickly looked at the charts an
relized I was missing a critical one if I took the new route. I visited the flight
service station and asked if they had it to sell. Nope. So I borrowed there's
and photo copied it. I am now flying from a copy. I shoul have thought of
that before. Alot cheeper than the $125 worth of charts I bought for the rest
of the trip.

So I opted to take the helo pilots advice and I pressed on to smithers BC.
Three hours of bucking 20-30 knot headwinds I finally had the airfield insight.
Then they told me the winds direct crosswind 18knots gusting to 28. I
squeeked one one and made one of the best landings ever. Woohoo I think I
finally figured it out.
I finally got fuel after waiting for 14 airplanes to fuel. There wa some big
flyinn in Whitehorse Yukon. I asked em how the weather was and they told
me probably not the best but they squeeked through the pass. So I decided I
was tired and tied the airplane down and got a room.

So here I sit in smithers getting a little r&r. Eating prime rib. Guess well see
what tomorrow brings.
