[rebel-builders] RE: BUY AVEX RIVETS

Posted: Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:31 pm

Bob,

Thanks,--I uploaded 16 pics that show my approach to reinforcing the
rear gear brace--Rather slow process as the software would not allow me
to download the entire file at one time.

Does anyone have some info on reinforcing the tailspring mounting area
on the early model Rebels?

Karl

7-28-10, Big TKS there khipp@99victor, for the heads up re, rivets from
Spruce. Order done! Took 2min.
Mattic was 5 times as much, .30ea, qtys of 100ea, and $35 to ship to
US,
unclear about rate of exchange, and a big "I dunno!" re, customs. He said
this is his "good day!". By the by never did waste time trying to locate
rivet
info in 41 thousand messages. where it was first suggested I look.
The rivets will secure the skin we took off to repair a collapsed
drag link
brace attachment on my '93 model. I must say that from what we saw
confirms that the landing gear is the weak point of the Rebel for rough
fields
or hard landings. The supporting skin is only .020 and a doz or so 1/8"
rivets
holding it all together. The inside floor rivets "lost their heads"
allowing the
innere structure to "roll" and fail. Be a good thing to check ea
preflight and
annual. Because all of the material in this area is .020 I'm afraid to
beef-up
only the attach point area as this might cause more extensive damage than
just the bulkhead ends and deformed skin that can be repaired. The
previously owner had repaired the other side so we just followed his lead
and
went in through the floor leaving a large inspection hole behind, alas
because
of the .020 skin and the possibiltiy the floor provides some structural
effort
cover must be riveted down not screwed. If I was building I would use
better
than that, infact the later model's may have done so including the Elite.
The
main gear attach is plenty tough just a mystery why the designer decided
to
use the thin stuff on the rest of what makes up the gear box.
Again tks much. You saved me many bucks and aggravation.
